The background doesn't bug me much, adds some context. What stood out to me what the dodge on burn on her face. I have no problem with the technique, but I have found there is a thin line between enhancing the shadows and highlights and then lightening areas which are actually in the shadows. By doing this it actually bring out a color in the shadows which is a little unnatural. It is very subtle, but I notice it because i have done the same before. Maybe a lower flow on the brush or higher feather, what sometimes also works is changing the hue on the brush at the same time to compensate for the shadow color vs highlight color. That all being said. I still loved the image, therefore still made my TT in a challenge that was very tight....

Glad you liked it. I already had suppressed much of the background but probably should have gone further; however, I couldn't resist retaining the background girl's expression of wistfulness - maybe even envy. The goat girl was a natural model, holding that pose (unasked) for several seconds while I framed my shot.

All comments appreciated, as ever.

I usually seem to rate your shots high but this one was by far the best and it was my #1 from the get go. I did wonder a bit about the faces behind but as Jade said, they do support the main point of the picture. Thanks for sharing a shot with such strong emotional context. Simply beautiful.

Good portrait of the girl and the goat. In my favorites.

This is such a natural shot, and I was drawn so much by the pride in the girl's eyes that the background, though busy, just faded from view. Excellent composition, detail and exposure.

Like this photo... in my favorites... the girl and the goat are the stars... possibly blur out the background children?

That goat head is well placed to take out the distractions. I know this one is so good I'd have played in PP to see what I could do to darken the background behind that goat's head. It is rare to get an image where background faces support the main focus point, but you have that here, and my top vote. The lighting, sharpness, candid fresh natural look, this is for me clearly and far and away, the best of the bunch, by a mile. Any pro portrait photog would be envious. It isn't perfect, but for a candid, it is superb. Congrats!

The background is unfortunately a little distracting. Cute shot of the girl and her goat, however
