Refreshing cold       ©2017 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ200       14th place, 48 points
1/1600s, f6.3, ISO 200, 66mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Crop. Silver FX filter. Denoise then adjust levels.       Extra Info: A wind was driving the snow and fine ice crystals in off the Bay. A tripod was useless as the wind was so strong. Not another soul in sight. No sound except for the noise of the wind and the snow squeaking underfoot. It's a beautiful experience.

Beautiful shot, nice crop and great in black and white.
It's currently hot in my part of the world, so it does indeed refresh. In my favourites.

Thanks for all the comments. I do appreciate the various suggestions and try them out (if I haven't done so already). I felt the focus should be on the blowing snow, not the trees. Including the tops of them meant I ended up with a lot of blank uninteresting background. I did try crops on the left and right but that reduced the area that was windswept. Perhaps I should have cloned out the small trees on the left and suggested more of the wide open space out on the water.

I had my tripod but it was useless in the wind. I ended up snuggled in between some of the big rocks on the edge of the water (ice) and managed to get a reasonably sharp shot between the gusts. I find raw nature fascinating; lost track of time and stayed out far too long and ended up in the doghouse :-)

Nice scene, just feeling the trees are chopped off.

One of those photos that really convey an atmosphere - and a bitterly cold one at that. Great choice for B&W.

    I can feel it.

Sweet B&W image - IMO, the trees on the left don't really add to the feeling or composition and could be removed.

I'm feeling cold just looking at this! I think you could crop a bit more off the right side.

I like this for the effective composition, sense of place and conditions. I can feel the wind and cold. The b&w treatment is perfect.

Looks blisteringly cold! I'm would crop or frame this differently to show more of the main subject -- the center grouping of trees -- and keep the smaller bushes on the left out of frame.

sounds like a great experience for you. Wonder if slowing the shutter speed down might better convey the wind driving the snow and moving the tree limbs?

Refreshing is not the word I'd use. Cold is what I would say, especially as it is 36 deg Celsius here today! Lovely photo but I keep wanting to cut out the small trees on the left.

Like the relationship of the three large clumps of trees to the two smaller ones. Might consider cropping a bit from the right and (if possible) showing a little more on the left.

we have been spared the misery of snow this winter but appreciate the work need to get a great image

i like the feel and the description. it has been a long time, but i can still imagine the sounds and being there. good exposure and contrast for the situation. i feel you may have short changed yourself by not getting the whole trees in the shot. just my thoughts.
