The beginning of a memory       ©2017 Anthony Comyn
NIKON D750       6th place, 129 points
1/125s, f8, ISO 100, 19mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Adjustment of curve and contrast. Nik Color efex sunlight filter applied. Unsharp mask. Dodge and burn on rocks and water to highlight and darker certain areas. Gradient adjustment on sky to darken. Black and White point adjustments to achieve the desired effect. Some selective desaturation of over saturated colors.       Extra Info: Single image exposure. I fell in love with this intriguing landscape. This photo will be a reminder of good memories made. I dedicate this photo to both my brothers and my mother; to our scattered, rugged and beautiful lives.

Well spotted Leanne, how did you know? Are we that obvious?

Congrats Anthony, this trip will be fondly remembered by me.

Nice shot, exposure , detail. IMO the bottom of the picture has nice depth into the water but cropping the bottom up to the rock above left adds a better mood for me.

Thanks for all the great comments. I see that some comments on a lighter scene or lighter shadows. So although your opinion is 100% valid, I thought i would mention I processed specifically for darker scene... So it is what I intended.

JadeO: I had the foreground lighter at some point but then went darker again, guess it was my preference.

Davmisunas: I am not sure the white area you refer to, in the sky? If this is it, this will be a result of the darker lower clouds which were present and the sun just below them on the horizon. If you are referring to the white on the rocks on the left side below the sunrise... this is bird poop (not very romantic.. :)). If you have referring to the white on the mountain in the distance, this is actually sand which is blown up the hill by strong south easterly winds... a feature of the area where this is used for sand boarding.

For interest though, this area is well know for a combination of clouds which are often present at the same time. The low hanging clouds are normally darker which is created on the coastline due to the high mountains. On many occasions I watched the formation of these clouds which is quite spectacular, these are present in my image clearly in the middle of the sky. The higher white clouds present on the right of my scene is much higher which normally comes in with a northerly wind. The higher clouds are normally the ones that produce the strong orange tones just after the sun has set due to the sun shining under them.

John, thanks for your opinion, it is valuable... for interest though, this photo I took after you had left, and this particular day we had a strong line of clouds coming from the east produced as I explained above... which was plaguing my scene just before I went out, which wasn't my plan... I was hoping to catch the higher clouds only... but in the end I loved the result, I think this contributed to a slighting surreal effect in the sky too.

Looks like John and Anthony went out together. A little dark but a nice scene none the less.

What a rugged coastline. The extra wide angle makes it look as if the water is running away downhill on both sides. I like the reflections in the water and the light glinting off the rocks.

Very Nice Photo...Subject, composure, focus and lighting right on... although not sure about the white area near sun set/rise?

Lovely dedication, and quite a pretty photo. I feel the foreground is a bit dead somehow, and maybe a little pp to increase the dynamic range would help.

Well what do I say? I know who this is because I was there. We saw that mountain many times. Very nice angle, very low which is great. Composition is great too. Not liking your processing at all though, shadows are blocked up and the sky is pushed way too far for my liking. Very unnatural feeling. That been said, you still make it into my TT.

I like this a lot. Similar to a couple of others in this challenge. However, you get the prize for doing it in a single exposure. Nicely done.

aoc... I guess thats the point... in my intepretation of it our lives are far from perfect... but still beautiful. So I would say that the conflict or contradiction you observe, is spot on.

Well-executed, though to me the scene seems rather rether dark overall, especially given the sentiments you ascribe to it.

great shot and nice sentiment in the extra info. i'm assuming your brother entered a shot from this area also. i like your exposure on the sky and also the sunlit rocks. the only suggestion would be to crop off the lower quarter of the shot (just my opinion as i enlarged this and scrolled up and down and cut off the bottom). but it is your memory to keep as you saw it. well done.
