  #183 Ad Hoc Filters
Entry 3 of 22

Joan of Arc with a cellphone       ©2017 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ200       3rd place, 162 points
1/320s, f5.6, ISO 200, 110mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: From RAW. Reduce highlights. Topaz Warm filter. Clone out distraction. Adjust levels.       Extra Info: My filter was heat haze and flames. The fire bubbles through the water in a fountain. I'd never seen it turned up this high.
I thought of this shot when the challenge was announced. The picture was planned - the model was totally random.

Excellent use of a found filter to create a tremendous effect. Congratulations.

Congrats Mepo, the more I look at the image, the more I love it! This is a very complex shot where you captured a lot.

This definitely rewards all the more for looking longer, Mepo. Now I see the inquisitors too. It must have been quite an experience shooting.

Thanks for the comments and votes. Jomari - I saw a couple of horses and a whole bunch of hooded figures from the inquisition :-)
You don't see the effects of the flame when taking the photo as in real life the flames don't disappear from the snowy areas. - the results when you finally review what you have taken are surprising.
I believe this is one I took with manual focus - the haze was playing games with my autofocus.

Congrats on a unique filter - actually quite brilliant. Image is very evocative.

Congratulations on 3rd. This is a fabulous entry. I have just noticed that the background flames to the right seem to reveal a horse with armoured rider - the ghost of St. Joan?

This is just simply amazing - is it a filter - I dunno, and in this instance, who cares? Amazing!

I love the effect on the building more than on the model. I think I would have liked it even better without the model.

I must say, this is certainly the hottest entry in the challenge!
It almost looks like the subject is on fire - and does not care! Do you recall what the focus of the camera was on? It looks like it was on the flames somehow. Or did you preset the focus just beyond the flames? Are outdoor winter fires the norm where you live? It looks dangerous!!! But hey, anything to get the shot, right?

Really inventive use of a natural filter. She looks like she is being devoured by the flames. Love the caption too.

creatively shot and good choice of filter. If I may also say, most people outiside I see blahh-blahhing or whatever on cell-phones are so oblivious to their surroundings that I'd would not have been surprised if you had claimed she was IN the fire!

It's disturbing but the effect is stunning. Brilliant to use heat haze as a filter.

Creative ad hoc filter - I like the overall effect and IMHO I think the model distracts somewhat.

Very good photograph where the filter is integral to the image. Excellent random placement of your model! The background looks great too.

Very striking and dramatic - would work even better if the cellphone were more clearly visible.

I love this! What a great marriage of planning and chance. 'Joan' looks very calm in her immolation - she must be sending up her prayers on that cellphone. The heat haze does wonderful things to the background building. This is my top pick (and there are some great entries to choose from).
