Colorful Castle       ©2017 Maike13
Panasonic DMC-LX1       6th place, 112 points
1/14s, f3.2, ISO 80, 50mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: HDR of three different exposures. Noise reduction; sharpening; cloned out a few stray reflections       Extra Info: Our 6 year old grandson heard I was looking for colorful items to photograph, so he built me this castle with his building tiles. He built it on a glass coffee table, so I taped some black cloth under the table, cut some holes under the towers, and shone some flashlights up into the towers for lighting, turning off all other lights.

Turned out my problems with my LX1 were due to a flaky battery. A new battery seems to have fixed it, at least for the time being.

This was my #3, I think it's brilliant shot, in many ways!

Maike13 - Such a nice surprise to see you entered again, and such a rewarding result for you and your grandson! It is so nice when we can share the joy of photography and teamwork!

Hope to see you enter again soon!

By the way, I see your LX1 is still working fine!!! Kudos!

Re the random selection. imo your grandson is right! Variety keeps the brain alive. Think how boring your castle would be if each wall or roof was just one colour.

Thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and votes. Our grandson was thrilled that his castle made the top ten, and I was pretty happy myself.
The grey spots mentioned are stray light shining through the black cloth I used (it wasn't completely opaque).
I think I got a bit obsessed with the reflections. In hindsight a shot without the reflections might have been stronger (as suggested), or maybe even just cropping some of the bottom off the existing image.
I did use a tripod, but I was having trouble getting a single shot to look the way I wanted, so ended up using HDR with three bracketed exposures. I think this is what caused the soft look around the edges of the tiles.
Sorry. No toy soldiers or similar available. Interesting idea though.
I'd like to see a life size version too. Perhaps our grandson will be an architect when he grows up. I'm not sure about his sense of color though. I've watched him build and tile selection seems pretty random :-).

It's great to have someone to give you inspiration. Kudos to your grandson for building a beautiful castle. The focus is a bit soft - did you use a tripod?

Great color, nice composition. While I like the simplicity, I wonder if including some other object (a toy soldier?) would add more interest to the scene.

Kudos to your grandson! Wouldn't it be great to see this built lifesize - so much better than the glass boxes that are shooting up all over. Perhaps having some exterior lighting might have improved the definition in the shadow areas. Still in my favs.

right on theme... colors that pop... in my favorites... not sure what the grey spots are on the table surface... I imagine you where going for the reflection but would like to see it on a non reflective surface, it may have popped more with out the soft reflections.

Quite clever and spot on theme. The lighting is dramatic and makes the image. Well done.
