sand dollar texture       ©2017 elliott
Panasonic DMC-FT5       5th place, 105 points
1/50s, f3.3, ISO 400, 28mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: crop, minor cloning odd bits, adjust contrast up, highlights down, minimal sharpening, resize       Extra Info: found the patterns more intriguing than the whole shell. tried few different crops but this seems make sense and prints well.

Oh man, this was my #1. I thought it was wonderfully delicate and pretty.

A fine example of natural patterns. I love the lighting on the right half of the sand dollar, as so much detail is revealed. In my top 10.

the choice of cropping has worked well, the pattern is clearly defined

I think this crop works really well. If you had included a portion of the lower half, it would have seemed truncated, whereas cropping it where you did suggests the symmetry of the missing part. Love the detail and the intricate pattern. High in my favourites.

Great image; however, I want to see more of the lower half of the dollar. Lighting is a bit uneven.

Beautiful image with perfect lighting to bring out the delicate patterns. There is a slight tilt to the right which is a bit distracting, but this is still very high in my TT

thanks for the comments. i used natural side lighting from a window and positioned the shell to emphasize minute shadows. it does have a surface curvature so the right side had a bit less light.
the whole shell may have photo'd ok with a black background, but there are some vent holes in the shell that weren't working for me. might show in out takes.

like the texture and patter on this image... a bit light on the left side but still a nice image and on theme...ITT

Great pattern! It reminds me of some sort of fancy needlework. In my faves.

Great example of not only patterns but textures. I'd suggest tweaking the crop a bit so that the distance of the pattern from the bottom of the frame is equal on the left and right sides. Being not quite symmetrical creates a visual tension that makes me want to fix that. The directional lighting creates good modeling but I suggest lightening the exposure of the left side in post to even it out.
