Post-Processing:
Cropped and straightened; cloned out dirt specks and distracting background objects (I didn't use a drop cloth); reduced highlights; corrected colors; denoised and sharpened; resized
Extra Info:
This was shot in a dark room where the only light source was a pen light, not flash.
This is a small clay pot made by one of the potters in the small village of Mata Ortiz in Mexico. Few hundred potters in the village carefully recreate their traditional method of hand formed clay pots. I found this in an art gallery many years ago while traveling through California. This particular artist uses black clay, mixed with graphite, then hand paints this super-fine patterns in matte black paint. This pot is very small, barely 4” (10cm) tall and is covered with this delicately painted patterns. I’ve read that artists often use a paint brush made out of 2 or 3 strands of human hair. I will post an image of the whole pot during the Outtakes.

Good job Yuki! I love the framing and the lighting (except for the bright reflection). Anyway, congrats on a well-deserved high finish.
Good to have such interesting looking pieces at hand!

This is a beautiful example of low key photography. The composition is perfect to bring out the classic design of the pot, and the lighting accentuates the lovely patterns.

I really like this - the pattern, the composition, the muted colour and the light. My top pick.

Very nice light, and the off-center positioning makes a great composition. Well done!
