Extra Info: This circular pigsty was built towards the end of the 18th century.
Its walls are of dry-stone construction and its roof is corbelled - where each circle of stonework is gradually reduced until a dome-shaped structure is formed.

The painted stone barn behind was made around 1750.

Thanks for the wonderful comments all.

I was really lucky with the lighting. When I saw the weather I shot down there and was first person in as it opened :-) .

The dry-stone construction is an engineering marvel.

Beautifully composed with the rock fence in the foreground and the pigsty aligned along the 1/3 line. Great colour and detail.

Perfect for the theme. Great example of the use of rocks in building. Well composed and perfectly illuminated.

Thanks very much all for the comments :-)

It's amazing the kind of precision they could manage with basic tools.

Interesting structure, nicely balanced by the farmhouse. I like the inclusion of the top of the sty wall in the foreground.

Lovely example of how stone has lasted over many years, and well taken.

Thank you all for the great comments.

ysal - I would have thought that some kind of wooden support could have been used. I have seen a photo of it being constructed but it sadly didn't show the inside.

What an interesting structure! I wonder if they used a wood form under it while building. Very nicely photographed.
