The Secret (Steelworkers) Mermaid       ©2017 RobertLavker
Panasonic DMC-GX7       13th place, 62 points
1/160s, f8, ISO 125, 70mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: increased shadows, decreased highlights, increased contrast; curves; transform - skew; crop; filter - unsharp mask       Extra Info: Over thirty years ago, Roman Villareal, a steelworker and three of his artist friends (Jose Moreno, Fred Arroyo and Edfu Kingigna) decided to make some of Villarealís sketches of a mermaid into a sculpture. Nine days later, a limestone boulder that once separated lake from land became the mermaid depicted in this image. The men left, and the mermaid became a secret spot known only to the locals. In 2010, the mermaid was moved to its present home on Lake Michigan, at 41st Street Beach.

I would be interested to see the front side of the mermaid, but I suppose the picturesque background would be lost in that case. Good find with an interesting story. In my favs.

What a great story. I like the way you've captured her against the skyscrapers that these steelworkers helped to build. The setting sun is casting some lovely shadows.

I do like this photograph and the context that you show nicely. The colours are lovely and the lighting brings out the texture details very well.

Good choice of subject which fits the challenge well. The skyscrapers in the background however detract me and draw my eye so would have preferred a tighter crop.

I love the back story! What a treat it must have been to find this before it was moved. I like the composition with the city in the background.
