It's a kind of magic...       ©2018 A.N.Other
Panasonic DMC-TZ30       2nd place, 210 points
1/16s, f3.3, ISO 100, 24mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Combined the exposures of 2 x 5 photos using Photomatix Essentials as the brightness range was way too extreme for one photo from my camera.

Stitched the two resultant photos together using Microsoft Image Composite Editor as my camera doesn't have nearly a wide enough lens to take it all in in one photo.

Used Nik Color Efex Pro 4's Tonal Contrast and Detail Extractor to give it some punch!

Used photoshop Elements 9's Transform controls and Liquify tool to pull and push the sides of the photo to get the verticals vertical.

Then the usual Levels, Contrast and Brightness, Dodge and Burn, Saturation adjustments, Clone tool, Spot Removal tool, Color Replacement tool, Sharpened.
Extra Info: More than one photo

Thank you all for the lovely congrats :-) . I'm glad my efforts were worth it in the end. Now to PP the full size version ;-) .

Jade O - I did my best to keep it looking 'realish'. A lot of the photos on the net of the cloisters are much more HDR than this. Even too much for me ;-) .

NEAT - It's the cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral, UK.

Very unique point of view to the normal images that you see shot in a church, well done. Oh that’s if it is taken in a church

Good finish! And not just the image!
Good verticals but almost too much punch for my taste, almost.

Great detail exhibited here and the lighting is perfect. is it possible to have leveled where the distant doors meet the floor? Top ten.

It is big and it is empty, devoid of any subject but the building itself, which I take it is the point. Beautiful detailed, and finely exposed, I sense HDR but can't be sure which makes it even better. Nicely framed, the geometry of your composition makes all the rest of the technical excellence pay off. My number 4.

Nice picture of old architecture. In my favorites.

A lot of skill taking a shot like this. It's very impressive for sure. However, I must admit that it feels vacant to me. No doubt I would not feel that if I had been there. These places do have a kind of magic as you said.

I'm so delighted you all like my photo so much. I'm proud to say that it's one of my favourites that I have taken :-) . I had fun planning, taking, PP'ing and of course, entering it into this challenge ;-)

Spectacularly beautiful. I love focus on the details on the ceiling especially.

The detail in the arches is beautiful. I'm sure the original photos would not have been as revealing - you've done a wonderful job of bringing out the detail.

Has a slightly artificial look that multi shot combinations tend to exhibit, but it's pretty unobtrusive in this case. Excellent job and a very attractive result.

Thank you very much. I'm delighted you like it so much :-) .

The exposure was the easy part. As long as I had bracketed exposures with no blown highlights on one end and some details in the shadows on the other then I knew I would be covered for PP work later. Please see the PP info for some detail of what I did regarding multiple pictures. I'll fill you in with more details in the Outtakes as requested :-)

beautiful picture - lovely detail, and it must have been tricky to get the exposure right. Would be keen to know more about the multiple pictures - please share in outtakes.

i was in Gloucester cathedral myself a few weeks ago and would not have been able to take something this great!

Thanks for the lovely comment Robert. I didn't realise I had developed a recognisable style. Glad you like the photo too :-)

I have seen similar images in past competitions over the years. It looks like "a Neil", which is a compliment. Perfectly illuminated and sharp as a tack. Well done.

I had to work hard to photograph the corridors empty. Chinese tourists mulling around looked somehow out of place ;-) . Combining 10 photos didn't help either as they would have had to all be motionless for the time I took the photos. Now if there was a meditating monk then that would have been different :-) .

Very impressive structure, well-shot. A few people might add appeal.

I'm delighted you like my photo both :-) .

ysal - I feel the opposite. Without HDR may of the beautiful details would never have been revealed. I'll post an original single exposure from my entry in the outtakes so you can see what I mean.

Not a big fan of HDR. I think it takes away from the old beauty of the building. Still a grand image, in my TT.

Thank you all so much for the great comments :-) .

doto- Magical three ways - It's a magical place to walk through, several scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot here and the magic of modern cameras and software let me bring out the beauty of this place like never before :-)

I'm guessing some HDR magic here but not too unnatural. The HDR effects are a little ugly in the arches towards the background near the doors. A good composition and overall impressive image.

Magic indeed! It's just incredible what was done so long ago and how it has stood the test of time.
