I had this in my top 10. And thank you for the explanation about the background, makes sense.

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments :-) .

ysal - I've just had a look at the original photo and that's just how it looked. I think there was a step down to the lake as you suggested. I'd be glad to post the original in the outtakes if you'd like to see :-) .

Great colors, light and focus on the bird. Well done. There is something bit unnatural about the background bokeh, the foreground grass is very sharp and suddenly there is a horizontal line where it gets fuzzy. Maybe that is just how the terrain was.

You did a nice job capturing the odd little fella... good color in focus and well composed.

    Thanks very much :-) .

Part of what you are seeing under the bird are the remains of OOF white feathers that were littering the floor. I spot removed several but left the parts that were in contact with the bird. I did do some sharpening and lightening of midtones too.

    good composition, colours and capture.

the underside of the duck looks a little sharp-edged - was it a bit over-sharpened?

Yes he is :-) . I did sharpen and dodge midtones a bit. Part of what you are seeing under the bird are the remains of OOF white feathers that were littering the floor. I spot removed several but left the parts that were in contact with the bird.

Handsome he is. There's a quite noticeable halo around the bird. This could be the result of masking or heavy-handed use of clarity, contrast, or sharpening.
