Congrats on your mesmerizing entry! I still don't see the center being recessed (honestly, it can be interpreted either way), but I do agree that the reflection indicates IN.

Congratulations on a challenging photo. Now that you have explained it, I can see why it would be recessed.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments. And kudos to Maike13, who was first to spot that the center is recessed and that the reflections wouldn't sense if it were projecting and shot from above.

Good question - I would say projecting, but it definitely could be either. I love the simplicity of the shot, the striking colours and the detail.

It looks flat to me but then again pretty much everything does as I don't really see 3D. If I had to make a choice, looking at the edges I'd say IN. If it was OUT you wouldn't get those reflections would you?

Good photo. I like the pattern and colours.

This is driving me crazy. Every time I think it is one way, it changes the next time I look at it. Intriguing geometry and beautiful colors.

Good illusion. I'd looked at your picture many times with no problem, before I read the title and extra info, and the center section always appeared recessed. However as soon as I read the title and extra info the center section popped out at me, and now I can only see it as projecting :-). The reflections in the glass only work if the center section is recessed. Nice picture by the way, illusion or no illusion.

A nice abstract image and perfect for the challenge. Well composed. The various shades of blue add to the interest of the image. In my TT's.

What an awesome optical illusion puzzle! My first thought was projecting, but as I look it just flips in and out. I think if you were looking up it must be recessed but if you were above it then it must be projecting. I can't figure out a way to tell. Great entry - you've had me looking for 1/4 hour or more.
