American Pelicans       ©2020 mbbin2
Panasonic DC-G9       16th place, 35 points
1/1600s, f4.5, ISO 200, 400mm, Aperture Priority, Other, no flash

Post-Processing: converted from raw and resized.       Extra Info: I finally searched for an answer about the bumps on the American White Pelican. The birds arrive on the breeding grounds in March or April; nesting starts between early April and early June. During the breeding season, both males and females develop a pronounced bump on the top of their large beaks. This conspicuous growth is shed by the end of the breeding season.
This shot from Caldwell Zoo on March 7 just a few days before our world changed in the US.

Given that skies were a predominant feature in 6 of the top 10 finishes in Main and 7 of the top 10 in Open, I'd have to agree with you. Maybe I'll just enter sunset shots from now on... : )

But I agree. Birds should be a Topic and maybe Sunsets should be the other one!

This is a terrific photo. It was in my top 10.

Jade, I think people give preference to subjects that most interest them and not all photographers favor wildlife. Maybe a challenge for birds is needed. It is more difficult to vote when the challenge has an open subject though I always enter these and usually am judged in the middle.

I think your birds were better than my bird. I never understand the voting...

This is a great photo - the detail and lighting are excellent, and you have managed to capture them at just the right moment. I too was curious about the bump. Apparently it is to make them more attractive to each other in breeding season, and is called a "Nuptial Tubercle"

Interesting shot, I didn't know this. I presume it's so they can distinguish between the male and the female.

Interesting picture with good sharpness and contrasts.

I like everything except my sense is that the shot is off level (not vertical).

Nice detail in the feathers. Happily the whites are not blown out.

I've never seen that before and I see a lot of pelicans! Great detail on the birds, would be better if you straighten the horizon.

Nice capture of the birds, and a good illustration of the bill feature. Thx for your info - i wasn't aware of that before, despite many sightings of pelicans.

One of the joys of the mini challenge there is no theme so judging is on the “ What I like” or “What appeals to my sense of humour “
Every picture has a story some are disclosed and some not, this doesn’t matter as The Image has meaning to every entry

thanks for the info on the slide show They looked different to any I had seen before. looks like a elongated childs food push or paint brush for the nest decor.
