Post-Processing: Mostly just remove some specs, resize and sharpen, and cloned out an edge.       Extra Info: Small birds have always been a challenge for me so I am inviting critique and constructive criticism. I really am unsure how to shoot them. This little guy brightened my day while we continue to socially isolate.

cookiejar Yes, he was a pleasant surprise. They usually don't come this close or stay this long. He seemed fearless too though he clearly watched as I moved around to different positions. Not sure why this one wasn't spooked but I think he just found a warm spot and didn't want to let it go.

    Calico : )

aoc46 Yes tighter would be better but I was starting to fear pixelating too much.

    Lovely shot.
As for how to shoot birds (or any other animals), my approach has always been...
You set up the camera and take what nature gives you.

Great capture of the bird - tighter crop might be even better.

Mepo So it's a chipping sparrow! I thought it was a house sparrow. I never knew there were two kinds here.

Old Finn Thanks!

davev Yes, I was so hoping you'd comment. I had some nice stretched wing shots which I missed and my shutter was way too slow, you are right. Certainly I agree the contrast is missing here and I will see what I can set up this summer.

I think it's a lovely shot of a very cheeky looking Sparrow, I'd love to have taken it. We have mostly house sparrows around here. It would be a nice change to see a chipping sparrow with his lovely Rusty hat.

    Beautiful Sparrow picture.

    You asked for some critique.
Looking at the exif, your shutter is way to slow.
These little birds flitter around with a heart beating way faster than ours.
For the sitting bird, you still want to be above 1/250.
Flight, 1/1000 minimum.
For the shot here, you did pretty well with the exposure, although it may be a bit hot on it's throat, breast.
The window sill isn't helping much either.
It's ok to have them on man made objects, but it helps if those objects have some interest or contrast.
Think of the soft bird on barbed wire.
A bird house, a sculpture, a set up to make it look natural are all good.
I hope some of these tips can help.

Lo He was on my window ledge...I motioned for him to move to the tree but he took offense and flew off...

ysal I agree the bottom of the window makes it a tight crop but I had no more real estate to work with.

He is beautifully taken, with lots of detail and a lovely blurred background. For me the image is too plain - I would like to see him in the branches of a tree, or with a few seeds at his feet, or moving - something to give context.

Good detail on the cute bird, and the creamy background really makes the bird stand out. Maybe a bit too tightly cropped at the. bottom.

Robert, thanks. I liked the simplicity of the image.

Steve Yes I did blur the background slightly and the blown highlights are a definite negative. I'll have one in outtakes for you.

fc I decided to put the face near dead centre but did wonder if I left too much empty space.

mbbin Thanks, means a lot coming from you.

Love the way the bird strands out against the green background. Well done.

Apr 24, 2020
Very nice. Did you perhaps do some work on the background in post? The main critique is the bird' chest is too bright and detail is being lost.

One of the joys of the mini challenge there is no theme so judging is on the “ What I like” or “What appeals to my sense of humour “
Every picture has a story some are disclosed and some not, this doesn’t matter as The Image has meaning to every entry

this is an excellent result, maybe a crop off the top. the iso would be better a stop higher to give f8 rather than 5.6. this will enhance the feather detail and focusing on the eyes which you have captured well.
the landscape works well as it doesn't cut off the tail but consider portrait when the bird is more frontal to you

    You nailed this!!
