A great shot which could only be bettered in the voting by something truly special. Congrats on what is really a very good number 2 finish. |

I love this bird study. The tones and light are beautiful. Even though the primary light is from above and behind, there is plenty of reflected light giving detail and a nice catchlight in the eye. This would probably be nice in colour but the monotone works really well. |

You have done a fantastic job of backlighting this photo without losing the detail in the foreground. Excellent capture. |

B&W shots of birds are unusual, and here the light is wonderful and it brings out the detail in the feathers. Edited on Feb 14, 2021

an excellent rendition of a subject where colour helps. the fine details are brilliant as is the lighting |

Beautifully lit and captured. I would have brightened the eye quite a bit to bring out the detail and add more "life" to the subject. I find the vignette a little overdone...it should be less obvious I think. The only other negative is the background which looks quite flat whereas a bokeh leaf pattern would be more attractive. Overall a beautifully detailed, very sharp, and well lit shot, perfectly composed. |

Beautifully captured! Love the light shining through the Cardinal's crest the seed or nut in its mouth. |

Nice capture of the bird, with good b&w tonal values. The bright area beneath draws my attention away; also wouldn't losing the chain, as it's another distraction. |

The lighting is dramatic. The vignette brings out the bird nicely. |

Almost seems a shame to reduce a colourful bird to black and white, but it does make quite an attractive monochrome shot. |
