Nyctohylophobia       ©2014 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ200       1st place, 194 points
8s, f5.6, ISO 400, 34mm, Aperture Priority, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Convert to Monochrome. Crop. Simplify filter. Adjust levels & contrast. Vignette.       Extra Info: Nyctohylophobia is a fear of forests at night. The row of lights I'm sure put most people more at ease but for me they just serve to increase the darkness of the surrounding forest. I'm not afraid of being mugged, I'm prepared to handle that. What makes my skin crawl is the dark depth of the forest - the unknown. Completely irrational I know, but I have to talk my phobia down every time I take this path. The simplify filter helped me show how weird the forest appears to me at night.

Congratulations on this wonderful image. I find myself looking for little sets of eyes peering out from the darkness. Thius is a good Halloween picture.. dark and scary! Congratulations on your top finish!

Nice going! I liked this shot for the technique and the comp. Good vanishing point, lighting, creepiness. Good to see you with a 1st.

I'd like to see the original version of this photo in the outtakes after voting is done. Your post-processing is most appropriate for the challenge theme. It does not look like an inviting place to stroll. In my favs.

Yeah, I'm with you. A little creepy. One afflicted would not want to deviate far from the path... You captured that impression well.

Very eerie treatment that makes your spine tingle as you gaze down the path - very effective pp

This is just so cool. Lighting and composition and the choice of B&W give it an almost eerie feel.

A very striking image, beautifully composed. Ironically, these factors - to me, at least - mitigate somewhat the sense of threat suggested by the darkness and the over-arching branches and light pole. Still, a favorite.

Not only did you capture the essence of the challenge, but your Post-Processing was done well. Excellent job.

Works very well for the challenge. I like your story too. I can feel the fear of not knowing what's lurking in the shadows. A fave.

Steve: Thanks. Appreciated even more coming from you.
fc: Thank you. Knowing your memory I'm wondering if you want to compare it to my entry in #66 In the Shadows. If so you are right - same path - different area - same effect on my neck hairs :-[

I like everything about this image -- the lighting, exposure, composition, and simplify filter effect. Really neat. My #1 fav.
