Eye'll bee seeing you       ©2015 A.N.Other
Fujifilm FinePix S100FS       9th place, 110 points
1/16s, f5, ISO 100, 260mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: I clipped a Raynox MSN-202 to the end of my lens and took 62 photos of this hoverfly's head, each shot was focussed approximately 0.05mm (0.002 inches or 50 microns) apart. These photos were then stacked together using Zerene Stacker followed by some sharpening, burning, dodging, levels, cloning, blur, saturation, and spot removal.       Extra Info: For a year or so I have been slowly designing and collecting pieces for a cheap/budget Photomacrography (the proper name for Macro Photography) set-up. This photo is the result of my first attempt at using my creation :-) .
No flies were harmed in the making of this photo ;-) . The hoverfly was found on a windowsill. I think he had been there for some time as his eyes had started to break down (the paler areas). The photo shows a view of a little less than 3mm (0.1 inches) across.

All I can say is WOW! Congratulations on the results you have obtained with your set up - this is awesome.

    Very impressive image, congratulations.

Yes much can be done with the technique you describe. It does make for a macro image like no other. I admire your patience.

johncomyn - Thanks very much. The background was quite grainy before. I smoothed it out for this challenge. This photo shows about 90% of full frame. I agree it maybe a bit close, but it was my first ever try at taking a photo with my new set-up and I didn't expect it to turn out as well as it did. The problem with puting it smaller in the frame is that you loose even more detail than has been already given the limited size photos we are able to enter.

kerszkavet - Thank you very much. I'm so glad you like it :-) .

RobertLavker - I'm pleased you rate it so highly :-) . I will try and get some photos of my creation ready for you to see.

SteveBee - Thank you very much :-). I have only taken one other close macro and one not so close with this set-up. I have taken several others over the years though that aren't so close either. I will try to make them so you can see them.

dk - Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it :-). Thats one thing I have trouble with, getting interesting subjects, so if you do have any spare flies, please ship them over to me! :-) .

forkcandles - Thank you very much. It was quite tricky lining the fly up perfectly with the lens using only the basic equipment I had.

RolandB - Thanks very much. I'm glad you like it :-) .

Jade O. - Thanks very much. I was so pleased with the way it turned out for a first attempt.

babysister - Thanks very much :-) .

eagle1 - No not the prettiest bug but all the details doo keep your eyes busy as you say :-) .

leanneqld - Yes I won one of their challenges with a slightly less PP'd version of this photo. I was so chuffed :-) .

elliott - Yes, a face only it's mother could love :-). It was tricky, especially as it was my first time but with practice it should become a bit quicker and easier. Thanks very much :-)

You sure put in a lot of effort, very well done. Only thing I don't like is the mottled background. Also maybe would have worked better if you stepped back a little.

    incredible detail, beautifully sharp

One of the best depictions of the multi-faceted insect eye that I have seen. I would love to see a picture of your set-up. Congratulations.

Amazing detail. Very interesting description of your technique. Would love to see more of your macro shots. You have great patience -- I think I'll stick to landscapes.

bravo for the technique (and lucid explanation). Stunning result. And, feel free to harm as many flies in my neck of the woods as you'd like ;-)
