Horns       ©2015 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       28th place, 15 points
1/100s, f3.7, ISO 100, 420mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Sharpen       Extra Info: Not near the best of what real nature photographers achieve but among my favourites because I liked the interplay among the horns, the backlighting worked, and the sharply lit eyes are really alive and I got really really close - for me - these guys are usually quite skittish.

Thanks, cookiejar. I'm big on lit eyes and was pleased this one worked out so well.

You have caught that enquiring look very well. Perfect light reflection on the eyes. Nice use of depth of field to blur the back ground.

Lo Who gnu you'd gno? I was happy with getting this one and with these who stood still just long enough (you can tell by their ears and head position they're on high alert.) If I recall correctly, this is one where you think, "Shoot first, worry about it later, since later you won't have a shot" and it worked!

I gnu it was you Jade - wouldn't you know that one of them would decide to look the other way? - can't get good models these days. All kidding aside, this is a tremendous shot, a difficult capture - since these guys don't stand still for long. The lighting is wonderful.

johncomyn I'm not so sure; I think the muted sky helps keep attention on the subjects.

LaRee Thanks. I was pleased with the result.

SteveBee Funny how sometimes things work out. Wish I knew what I did right so I could keep doing it.

eagle1 Thanks.

Nice framing, good detail in the shadows. Would be nice with more detail in the sky.

I think you caught their attitude. It is surprising that the fur is so well exposed and has such great detail from where it looks like the sun is. Well done.

Pretty good under less than ideal lighting that puts their faces in the shade.

fc Wary is right. Those ears show where they are "looking".

you have got the "wariness" of these animals
due to screen size I am using at the moment with a larger magnification than normal. the screen just showed me the three heads and faces, cropping out the rest of the picture and the eyes are so much more in the picture

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm going to say I'm not in agreement. I accept the legs are distracting for you and appreciate your taking the time to comment, and, of course, your perspective is a valid one. But here is my thinking. I normally am adverse to amputated limbs (cutting off at the knees so to speak) but here is works just fine for me. I feel the massing of the upper bodies is needed to "ground" and "orient" the heads and horns and the cut-off of the legs and hind quarters helps draw attention to the horns instead of the whole animal. The fact that the subjects themselves serve to "self-sever" the hind quarters is part of why I like how this one worked so well. But that is just my perspective of course. I really do see the horns as so prominent that they dominate the photo leaving no doubt as to where the point of focus/attention is intended to be. [No pun intended if you get my point.]

The legs are a distraction for me. I wonder if you would consider a pano of just the heads (crop the legs off completely). In my mind that concentrates the viewer on the beautiful expression in the faces. You are right, the backlight worked very well.
