Action on the Pier       ©2015 RobertLavker
Panasonic DMC-GX7       23rd place, 35 points
4s, f8, ISO 125, 572mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Photoshop CS5; levels, shadows and highlights, unsharp mask.       Extra Info: An unusual interpretation of Navy Pier in Chicago taken from a window on the 44th floor of the John Hancock Building. A Lumix telephoto lens was zoomed from 100-300mm during a 4 sec. exposure. Camera and lens were mounted on a tripod.

Really creative, and you've achieved an interesting and unusual photograph. Well done.

I like the fire-works effect here, and the general composition.

Like the colors and the way all the lines lead the eye. Composition would be better if the dominant round shape were less central - either higher or lower in the frame.

Really good effect and I like your plain explaination in the extra info.

I think you need to punch the contrast if you are going to do light streaks so the darks are truly near black. Try duplicating the image and combining the layers to make the colours more vivid and the blacks darker.

I like the streaking affect you got in the lights here, and I do think I can see some reflections in the glass which suggests it was taken through a window.

very good technique using the manual barrel zoom. i know some members would like to have that sort of control.

Robert, I like your interpretation and motion you have introduced. It would have been nice if the two main sources of light were closer together because it's almost two separate pictures and each is drawing the eye in opposite directions out of frame.

For the photo : I am sure this is a wonderful view. The zoom effect unfortunately does not compliment the photo. (my opinion). A longer exposure (15sec) would allow for more detail and light. Your composition seems spot on, wheel on the vertical thirds location, and the road forms an attractive diagonal line from bottom right? The zoom also adds a ghostly/misty/soft effect that takes away that "wow factor" from the actual view.
For the challenge: I would have loved to see a window frame of some sort in the capture.
