Winter Harbour       ©2015 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       10th place, 100 points
1/125s, f5, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Four image stitch, curves, minor clone.       Extra Info: Taken at -17C at 2 p.m., the warmest part of the day!

The two domed units are ordinarily used to house road salt, heavy equipment, etc. Beside me four guys were fishing with rod and reel - they were wearing survival suits.

Thanks for your votes and comments. I didn't expect anywhere near top 10 for this so I'm not sure why it did so well. I thought my Main entry was far better.

mrsawyer Skiied on Sunday and the temp was -27C with the wind chill reportedly at -38C (almost -40F). We like to live here because it is fun!

This was in my top 3. Stark and beautiful.

Thanks Jade! Why do people like to live where lakes freeze? Of course, others may ask why I live where streets used to melt (until they figured out a new way to make streets).

mrsawyer The odd texture is ice. With the right wind, it will bunch together and form...bigger ice!

An interesting take on the theme! Kudos!
I have yet to discern what odd texture is in the foreground of the water. Please tell. In my favs.

aKilter Actually with no wind, it wasn't half bad. Thanks for the vote!

Mepo Woke up yesterday to -27F so nothing to do but go skiing! (Balaclava frosted a bit and wind actually blew one of the girls I was with (11 yo.) backwards at the top of the hill - she had to struggle to get to the downslope. I often try to avoid the anticipated general trend of entries so pleased it worked for you here.

fc Plenty of nutters to be found wherever there are fish.

Lo Lighting is all natural! I'm still on the fence about the foreground. It meant sacrificing the ice on the seawall opposite at this size.

rd52 Sorry. Forgot to do the F conversion. (That's F for Farenheit!) I take it you mean you don't own a pair of long pants (if not, not that there is anything wrong with that.) I used Panoramamaker 3; the 10yo. software that came with my FZ-30.

A very unique and creative image. Because of this, and the fact you were willing to even go out in such brutal conditions....it earns a place in my top ten.

I don't like this simply because I'm living it right now and it's so unreasonably cold I would prefer a photo of a furnace :-) Love the unusual view and intend to mimic it sometime. Interesting that open water can be so much colder than when it's a sheet of ice. Not as 'industrial' as some other entries but it gets in my tt.

so we brits don't have all the nutters who fish all year round. minus 14. even i would feel the cold out in that.
hope you bagged your camera in plastic before going home it prevents internal condensation

The lighting in this photo is superb - you can feel the cold seeping into your bones. I wasn't a fan of the curved fence at first, but it really is necessary to ground the photo and provide contrast.

Brrr! I had to look up -17c and convert to Fahrenheit. I have never been anywhere that cold, I complain when it gets in the low 50(F)'s here. I don't even own a pair of pants.
What program did you use to stitch? I really like the curved handrail, I imagine it is an caused by the stitching, but I think it makes the pic. Really nice pic, good luck in the challenge.

babysister Today is -27F (-20C) with a wind chill of -38F (-36C). Perfect for skiing!

This looks SO cold. You deserve a prize for just taking it in that weather. The stitching is very well done and creates a wonderful panorama. Right on theme.

ysal Wasn't sure if centre or off-centre was the better choice.

Love the composition, although the 2 domes could have been slight off-centered. Still a beautiful and stark image.

cookiejar Minimal colour on this day for sure. See outtakes for the same scene with some colour!

SteveBee Appreciate the effort in the thorough critique. The sky was actually that dark over the sea and there was a bright patch right where the domes were. I'm still unhappy with the railing -- I think the image calls for the domes to be dead centre but the image is maybe better if the left frame was just to the left of the domes (rule of thirds).

aoc46 Unfortunately, I failed to capture how magnificent the bleakness was that day; the subtle light and dead calm wind made it spectacular.

eagle1 Very little PP; see outtakes.

Phil I was unsure whether to zoom on the domes or pano this one.

Very impressive composition and eye-catching subject. Nice minimal colour pallet.

    Theme - 5
Technical - 4 Almost B&W, just a tinge of color. Not sure if I would prefer as a straight B&W
Composition - 4 I'm not quite sure about the asymmetry of the rail. On the one hand it is interesting, but on the other hand it strongly leads my eye out of the right side of the frame. Did you purposely darken that side?
Originality -5 Like the way that you used the rail in the foreground, and the way it curves makes it much more interesting
Overall Impression - 4 A striking image with strong geometry

Certainly captures the bleakness of winter!

Brrrrr - it gives me the chills just looking at this image (which I'm guessing you wanted to convey by your processing). Works for me! I like the panorama effect and the unique subject matter (not something you see every day!). Well done.

Like the curve of the rail arching round the two domes and the colours in the sky to the left are great.

Thanks, breadmaker. I was more interested in the guys fishing, actually, lol! This is one of those images you know loses a lot in the downsizing. For example, the ice is spectacular but you can barely see it downsized. I appreciate the vote!
