Last Skate       ©2015 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       7th place, 128 points
1/125s, f5.6, ISO 100, ?, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Adj brightness. Used a Buzsim filter to try and set a mood of tranquility. Classical music was drifting up from the canal.       Extra Info: People getting a final skate in the evening before the canal is closed for the season tomorrow.

Congrats on your double top ten! This scene looks vaguely familiar. Is this a place you've shot for a previous challenge? (With you having over 100 entries, I didn't try to look through them all.)

Thanks everyone for the votes and especially the comments.
The link I gave to Ginny should work for anyone who likes jigsaw puzzles. You can put your own photos in there and send them to friends - Lot's of fun.
AN Other. A Buzsim filter softens, simplifies and boosts all in one. The original of this shot was very sharp and detailed and showed all the bits of debris that are left at the end of winter - a most unattractive time. The filter let me express the enjoyment we were all enjoying, mixed with a little sadness at the end of skating. This is one of those times where the camera records things we don't want to see. Thank you for commenting. I'm humbled by all the references to Lowry who used simplification to express a scene far better than I can.

    Michael:

I suspected that this was yours and it no way influenced my vote. It is a great image and wonderfully composed.

This photo reminds me of an L.S.Lowry painting. I'm guessing a camera phone was used to get this effect or maybe it was the Buzsim filter as I have no idea what that would do ;-) .

aoc46 - Thanks. Glad you got that impression.
kerszkavet - Funny you should mention the distribution of people. I was initially disappointed that is was not as crowed as usual but then the spread out figure grew on me.
eagle1 - Wow - much appreciated.
Andris - Thanks for the vote. Believe me it's better without the fine detail showing the debris from winter.
Phil99 - Another Lowry! I'm totally flattered but not sure my old art teacher would approve :-)
Robert - Thanks. You got it in one.
Lo - Merci
Old Finn - So true.

I like it. I understand people prefer moving on the ice than on the road in the left side.

A warm and inviting scene that shakes off the bitter cold of winter.

Wonderful perspective. The lighting gives a warm glow and makes this an effective shot. Is this the world,s largest skating rink.

I think this is brilliant. Love the low sunlight and the watercolour effect but the best thing is the contrast between the dull, boring buildings compared to the love of life, the fun, the daftness of people skating down a frozen canal. It has a Lowry feel to it.

I like comp and mood in pic, but it lost a lot of quality in pp. In my T10

Painterly effects don't always work with some images, but the Buzsim filter effect with this image is perfection! The best of a Photo/Painting impression I've seen. Just love this! #1 all the way.

I love this picture, and really like the filter you've chosen, which combines with the subject to make it look like an old painting.

I like the sharp diagonal lines, and the uneven distribution of the people, plus the fading sunlight (and a fitting title)

Nice. The filter gives it sort of a Xmas card feel.

fc, babysister, breadmaker. So happy you like the filter. Thanks for the support. Lowry eh? The matchstick men :-)

As soon as I saw this it reminded me of a "Lowry". A colourful scene helped by the glow of the winter sun on the buildings. One of my favourites.

Thanks very much, glad you liked it. I have made it into a puzzle for you as you suggested. Here is a link to it:

Like the effect you used,it almost looks like a water color painting. Also nice use of the two parallel bridges. It would make a neat puzzle. In my high faves.
