Thanks all for your comments and votes. I took somewhat of a risk but did exactly what I wanted to do with this image. Winding up 2nd place was more than I expected, so that makes me happy. SteveBee: I think the bit of halo-ing is a result of reducing the size of the image for entry, because I certainly don't see it on my full-size TIF or JPG originals.

Congratulations! I think it would have come out higher with a more natural sky. Besides the psychedelic blue, there is quite a bit of haloing around the edge of the building due to the saturation.

Great find, well composed. I would have placed it higher if it looked more like a photo than an engraving. In my picks anyway.

Looks it has been a valued building in its time. Well composed and good PP.

This is really heartbreaking. I'd love to restore it. Great photo.

This must have been a real beauty when it was new and full of life. Love the detail and the composition, but find the colour a bit unnatural

What a find. Well done and good luck. Looks like something out of a Dickens novel - definitely has atmosphere - deserted and abandoned. The fence and the wooden structure supporting the front porch could mean that some renovation is taking place - I hope so.

Biggest abandoned house I've ever seen, very nice find! Framing is excellent. Think the processing as far as saturation is overdone though.

SteveBee: yes, the building has been jacked up for a number of years actually. I'm surprised it hasn't fallen over. I'm not sure the original owners are even around any more, but for years, a large sign was posted on a fence that could be seen from the nearby freeway which read: "Help Fund Our Project to Bring The Redman House Back to Its Original Glory" - with a number to call. The sign itself has also fallen in disrepair, and barely readable, but it's still there. Obviously, the "project" never succeeded or even got off the ground.

RobertLavker: The building is on private property and surrounded by a cyclone fence, where "No Trespassing" signs are posted. Although I admit to sneaking up close once or twice, seeing that the under-flooring of the house is up on cement blocks and pilings (and has been that way for quite a while), I never felt safe to venture inside.

kerszkavet: also see my response to aKilter, although I don't understand why making something "hyper real" would detract from the theme of dilapidation/abandonment. I can respect your opinion, but your logic eludes me.

This is my #1 favourite right here. Fantastic colours and lighting. Great building! And a very crisp-looking photo.

What a great find. Outstanding focus and sharpness. Could you get inside? High in my favs.

I like your subject, and composition. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of the post-processing, as this looks hyper-real and does not add to the theme of dilapidation / abandonment.
Looks like a great shooting opportunity - have you any close ups of the front of the building? would be good to see them in outtakes

Other than the strange blue sky I like this a lot. Looks like it's jacked up for moving and restoration.

aKilter: this is a rather well known piece of property where I live (it can be easily seen as one is driving by from the nearby busy freeway). I have photographed it several times, and mostly as B&W renditions. You wouldn't know this, of course, but I've grown tired of B&W versions (which I think are over-used on such "abandoned building" photos). Although, B&W processing can certainly lend interest to such an iconic structure, what I was aiming for here was an attempt to inject some color energy and life into what is in reality a rather dull, gray, deteriorating building, surrounded by an unexciting brown-ness. I did this by cranking up the color vibrancy to accentuate whatever colors were actual there in the picture - even if it pushed it into the territory of being a bit unrealistic.

    Beautiful colors!
I have to find that "vibrancy-lever" in one of my PP software...

Fantastic building, that does a great job of meeting the challenge requirement. My only complaint is with the processing. The whole scene looks somewhat artificial and over processed.

Because of the state the house is in, I would have reduced the overall saturation. However, I think both the sky and house would look much better in B&W, and I would love to see a B&W version in the out takes.
