Congratulations on a great 2nd. I think blacksmiths are the same the world over - only they can make sense of all the tools and peices of metal around them.

Amazing shot. What a chaos, yet everything looks to be in place. In my top 3.

Something looks a bit off with the color and sharpening.

Chaotic but purposeful. I didn't like this the first go around but it's grown on me quite a bit.

Thank you for seeing it the way I do. It's kind of counter intuitive but the clutter makes the photo I feel.

Somehow the busy and chaotic aspect makes the shot. Nicely seen.

Certainly fits the theme. Great depth of field and sharpness throughout the image. Well conceived and carried out.

babysister - You might be right but the spoon I was thinking of is to the right of his head :-) .

I did reduce the blueness of the photo somewhat but there is a lot of natural blue in the photo. The tone mapping seemed to exaggerate the blue that was already there. Iron turns blue as a result of the firing process. Have a look at this photo and description :-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempering_(metallurgy)#/media/File:Tempering_standards_used_in_blacksmithing.JPG

Out of interest I maxed out the colours on the original photo to see what it looked like. I will post the result on the outtakes thread about 21 hours after the announcement of the results.

aoc46 - Glad you like the place. I did try cropping in a bit but no matter which way I cropped it I was cutting off his tools of the trade, so I decided to leave as many in as I could so people could get a better feel of his working environment.

Yes it's under the pile of horseshoes! Lovely scene. Would have like a little less blue.

Great scene - would prefer a tighter crop on the worker, making him less central, to reduce the distractions a bit.

I don't think I read the theme in the same way you do. To me, cropping in as close as you described would cut out dozens of items of his 'tools of the trade' that have been added to over the centuries or 'atmospheric clutter' as you called them.

I did consider zooming in closer when I was there, but I only had one chance to show you this wonderful location and a much closer crop would have prevented me from doing that.

A very interesting photo. As far as the theme it would have been better to do a closeup of the smith's hands and the anvil on which he is working. All the rest is just atmospheric clutter.

This is a great shot, right on theme, full of interest, all in focus and well lit. Should place well.
