S is for Spider       ©2015 A.N.Other
Fujifilm FinePix S100FS       4th place, 151 points
1/125s, f6.4, ISO 200, 154mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, flash

Post-Processing: Cropped. USM. Noise Reduction. Cloned. Desaturated. Auto Levels (to correct the tonal range and color balance by adjusting intensity levels of image shadows, midtones, and highlights). Burn and dodge. Resized.       Extra Info: As this challenge fell over Halloween I thought a photo of a spider would be appropriate. This spider is an Araneus diadematus.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araneus_diadematus

They are found throughout Europe and across North America.

Adult females range in length from 6.5 to 20 mm (0.26 to 0.79 in), while males range from 5.5 to 13 mm (0.22 to 0.51 in).

On researching this spider I found out that their legs have no muscles. They move by hydraulics alone - Amazing!

WARNING! - Ladies of a sensitive disposition should not look too closely as I think its private parts may be visible!

This was my #2 pick. I suppose spiders have a "creep factor" that must be accounted for in the voting. Congrats on the top five finish.

Maybe spiders have a glass ceiling of 4th place on our site. See: http://panachallenge.com/challenge/show_entry.php?entry=10054&challenge=176

Great shot, Neil - and you're right, there are some subjects that have an uphill battle - bugs and anything to do with guns, come to mind

Thanks very much Robert. Not the most popular subject I guess ;-) .

As the old Brooklyn Dodger fans used to say "we waz robbed". IMHO this is a number 1 shot. Congrats on a great image.

Thank goodness I'm not afraid of spiders or I'd be three feet in the air by now. Superb detail and colour.

jomari - yes she does look more impressive in my photo than she did in real life.

Jade O - I just used my Raynox DCR-150 infront of the lens with a reflecting dish (literally!). I'll show you a photo in the outtakes.

wrosenthal - Yes, I was kicking myself LOL.

Amazing detail - makes the spider look huge!
Lol at your warning to sensitive ladies. My sister is a sensitive lady, although the shock to her would be the spider itself. She goes into melt down if she sees one - even a picture.

Great shot! Love the detail, composition and the way the background picks up the spider's knee joint color. Maybe with the red and green, you should use it as a Xmas card! (Or maybe not.)

Thanks for the great comment. I was lucky with the background. It's the Pyracantha hedge in our front garden.
