Sailboats       ©2015 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       13th place, 68 points
1/125s, f5.6, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Mostly sooc but a bit of curves to selected areas to "pop" 3 boats out of the misty background a bit by adding contrast and brightening somewhat.       Extra Info: Two of the boats weren't helped much by post-processing, so I left them as is. I didn't want to add contrast to the misty background or the dull foreground since I want the eye to go to the boats. Processing was a very subtle adjustment and the image looks pretty much as shot.

ysal Maybe that is it. Of course, I know that mast or no mast only sailboats have keels like that but maybe I shouldn't have assumed everyone would see and recognize that.

As a photograph, this is a fantastic and beautiful shot. I think that it slightly missed the challenge title. Without the sails, these are just boats....

fotto There are some shots you like irrespective of where they place. I was very satisfied with this one and it may rank as one of my own personal favourites; time will tell. Wider recognition is nice but that satisfaction of being happy with your photo is still the best reward.

Bill I thank you for your comment as well. Set up studio type shots have their place, and it is easy to control all the elements. But this kind of image and yours I think is more fun and more intrinsically satisfying. I hadn't thought of shooting here until literally five minutes before. I shot both images in a ten minutes stop on the way to work the day before deadline. When I saw the fog that morning I just knew where I wanted to go.

Thanks for the comment elsewhere. I decided some time back that I would keep doing what I do and if something fits the challenge, submit it. You know that I don't very often do set up shots and those seem to do very well here. I liked both your pix and they were in my tops. Not typical for you and I had no idea they were yours.

Thanks Peanut. And for your vote!

Thank you all for your votes and comments. Each one is appreciated. Peanut, fotto and I agree on this much, I think. I prefer this entry by far over my Open entry, on every level of artistic merit. But not everyone agrees, lol!

Lovely picture. I can smell the damp air.

Yes, Lo. Lonely ships awaiting a cold winter, each one lovingly wrapped by their careful owners -- well except maybe the last one on the right - his owner obviously doesn't give a darn. Ha!

They look so forlorn without their beautiful sails. Love the atmosphere.

elliott I thought it was necessary and framed it that way for three reasons. 1) I wanted to enhance the sense of quiet emptiness that I experienced there. 2) I wanted the boats aligned in the middle of the line bisecting the bottom third of the image 3) It happened to be where the frame ended when I framed the edges to capture what I wanted in the width expanse of the shot - but I would have otherwise cropped to realize 1 & 2 anyway.

fc I never thought of that.

high in my favs. only suggestion would be to take a bit off the top. that's a lot of negative space up there. just my thoughts. great shot anyway.

Nice autumn feeling with that misty background. Well composed. In my favorites.

Nice misty scene, like the soft feeling here.

fotto Thanks. The composition was there. I couldn't move the boats if I wanted to!

aoc Tried the tighter crop but as I suspected, I need the expanse of misty sky and dark foreground to set off the boats and evoke the feeling of isolation. Looks better full size.

Like the composition of the five boats, and the mist effect is very nice. Might prefer a slightly tighter crop.
