  #33 Glass
Entry 3 of 42
A light from within       ©2007 Maike13
Panasonic DMC-LX1       3rd place, 252 points
1/4s, f5.6, ISO 80, 54mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: Boosted Brightness, Contrast and Saturation a little. Cloned out a couple of overblown highlights. Cropped, Resized and Sharpened       Extra Info: There's actually two pieces of glass here - you just can't see the other one. Placed the glass paperweight on a glass topped table, cut a hole in a large piece of black card and taped it under the table top glass, with the hole directly under the paperweight. Shone a flashlight up through the hole into the paperweight to give it that 'lit from within' look. Dimmed the house lights and took the shot. Used a Gorillapod to hold the camera steady.

Congrats finishing TT Maike! Composition is a never ending quest. I enjoy having crop room and toy with comp using that all the time. Aspect ratio's change all the time when cropping for composition. One thing I do during the crop is to decide where I want the composition on all four sides and then extend it out a bit from the subject. I try to see it as if I had it matted and/or framed. If an edge is tight near the subject it will be that much tighter when a frame is added, and would be cramped.

Wow!!! Thanks everyone for the comments and votes.

broph/ I was torn on whether to clone the spots out or not. The reflection outline is pretty faint on that side and part of me felt the dots helped define that edge of the reflection. I think you're probably right though, and I should have removed them.

Plebian/ You pinpointed my Achilles heel :-). I have the worst time with cropping. I probably had thirty different crop variations trying to decide what I liked best. I had plenty of extra area in the original so I have no excuse. f/5.6 seems to be about where my lens is sharpest, which is why I used that. I'll have to try a smaller f/stop and see if it would improve this shot.

audiredred/ Thanks for commenting twice. First time that's happened to me, but much appreciated anyway :-)

Excellent setup, and results! Comp could be improved a tad. Maybe have a bit more room on either side and at the top of the frame. Bottom side is good. Not knowing what was cropped it would be either less zoom or pull back from the subject some. Maybe use a smaller f/stop for harder sharpness.? Good strong color and saturation. Post is effective.

Interesting and well composed. The color on black with reflection is always a winning combination. IN my TT~! Good Luck!

Very cleverly done; a fitting interpretation of the challenge, and a beautiful photo as well.

    Nice setup and beautiful lighting.
I would have cloned the two distracting dots bottom right as they have a tendency to attract the viewer's eye.
Great use of the imagination and very beautiful.
