Congrats finishing TT nrgaudet! Wonderful image! Focus is set just behind the dancers legs. If it was locked strong her her it would have been my #1. Still a wonderful photo!

Lovely shot; of course you could have cloned out the tree - but leaving it in lets us know why the lights are there! Fantastic.

And an example how a shot that's not technically perfect (focus) can still be an emotional & visual hit.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. For all of its imperfections I'm very proud of this photo. I find the feedback on this website VERY helpful, meaningful and valid.

I'm interested to see how this photo stands up in this contest!

Looking at the floor I can see that focus is behind the dancer. Bummer as this is a wonderful photo.

At first I found the 'mist' a little distracting, but the longer I looked at it the more I liked it. The fact that nothing in the frame is really in sharp focus adds a dreamlike feel to it, with the gold reflection and the little sparkles in the tutu only adding to the 'painting' effect.

Perhaps not the sharpest focus on the feet but still a very compelling image. Superb composition. Easily in my first round of favourites.

The composition is very nice. I like the reflection of lights framing the dancer.

I really like this shot. Concentrating on the shoes is an unusual and therefore interesting take on the ballerina. The composition is perfect. The reflections and lights shining through the dress add further interest. The dry ice contrasts nicely with the floor and neatly divides the shot. Ideally the shot could have been take from a touch further right to prevent the tree showing behind the dress but it's a very, very small imperfection.

Changed my mind - this is now my #2! Good luck!

Composition is good and cotton batten on the dance floor creates the illusion of dancing in the clouds.
I would have cloned out the sprig of green on the hem line as it is distracting.
The reflection of the tree lights surrounding the dancers shoes adds a special high lite to the shot.
Good luck.

I love this shot! Because there are so many excellent entries, I had to be much more picky than usual in order to be able to arrange my top ten. This beautiful picture was my initial #1 favourite, but ended up in third place because of the tree branch. I still love it though! Well done!

The composition of this shot really works for me. Visually the offset of the feet is justified by the need to fit the full width of the tutu. I also like the contrast created by the shiny floor vs the snow.

liamb: Thank-you! It was my daughters Christmas ballet show. It's nice to have these photo opportunities while participating in the activities with your family.

harpazo_hope: I like that too. I admit it wasn't planned, but it is one thing that made this one particular shot that night my favourite.

Image-Anne: A big Thank-You!

Sophisticated simplicity in this beautiful and well composed image! I love soft tones, and the tasteful pp which adds a bit of magic! Unique and creative makes this lovely image a top contender!! I love it!

LaRee: Thank you, I really appreciate that!

Citymars: Thank you so much! You are right it was during an actual performance and I was about 10 rows back in the middle. I was deliberately trying to get a toe shot timing it for when they were pointed and was very very pleased about the timing I managed.

I agree with you also about the bit of tree behind the dress, but in the end what I'm learning is that other than simple cropping and very minor changes I'm often happier if I don't photoshop my pictures to death so I elected to leave it.

Aprilesole: Thank you! Very much appreciated.

It was a fun night for me with my camera. Flash was not allowed, not that it would have helped, but I was nervous about the performance of the camera once the lights went down, but it all came together very well and I managed severa shots I liked very much. Dancers that had good pauses were easier for sure. All in all, despite it not being my favourite subject matter, it was probably my most rewarding night taking photos.

Very pretty! I like how the twinkling lights show through the dress. Excellent exposure, and the colors are good. The best feature (to me) is the composition. Could be a tad sharper, though assuming this was a performance photo, I think you did very well, and the touch of softness certainly fits the subject anyway! Also, if it's not too much pp for your taste, I might have tried cloning out that dark bit of evergreen branch poking out from behind the skirt. Overall, good job.
