Panasonic DMC-FZ30       9th place, 110 points
1/80s, f11, ISO 80, 35mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Adjusted brightness and contrast. Cropped and re-sized.       Extra Info: The warm light did little to erase the effect of the bitter cold and wind. Wrap the camera in a plastic bag before taking it into the warm.

Congrats for TT..Good.. true.. the texture, composition are very very good.. It is really difficult to bring texture on the snow, unlike sand. About aperture, 5.6 is the sweet spot for FZ-30. If you take a news paper and make two shots with 5.6 and 8 you may notice which is better.

The eye is drawn along the front fence and then zips up the diagonal... And then you see the texture in the snow... Like it

Like it a lot. The grain in the sky a minor quibble.

Hello Out of focus: I prefer the first part of your comment :-)
In this situation I had to be close to the fence and I wanted it to be very sharp, I also wanted good depth of field to show the texture of the snow. This lens seems to have a sweet spot at f8 but that seemed to loose the detail in the snow in the distance. #27 is a very nice photo but the object distances are entirely different. My experience is that every lens has a sweet spot - usually between f5.6 and f11 and it is worth experimenting to determine where it is. I don't recall hugeness or weight to have any bearing on the sweet spot but I have been wrong before.

Hello Jade O: Your comment was most appreciated - the texture was exactly what I was trying to capture. The pattern on the snow had reminded me of the sand in the Sahara desert when I was there. The wind (and the wind chill) had been high for a couple of days - very unpleasant weather as you are no doubt aware.

The photos very very good.. but did you try F5.6? i think the aperture is most misunderstood concept.. F11 is no good here, unless your lens alone is huge and weighs a pound... for the patterns in snow, nice 1/3 rule the shot could be far better. see photo 27.. the aperture is 2.8 and is has ok range..

Wonderfully complex for such a seemingly simple image at first glance. This is so textured I can feel it!
