Metro Grocery Store, Parkway Mall, Toronto #2       ©2009 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       15th place, 19 points
1/30s, f2.8, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Used Arcsoft Photobase editor to modify colours in the original image by adjusting contrast, saturation and sharpening, then used GIMP to overlay a lighter sky/store image over a darker sky/store image, then cut out overlaid lighter sky to reveal darker sky layer underneath while leaving the lighter store image showing, flattened image, slight crop, and resized. Essentially this is tone mapping done manually.       Extra Info: This is the image I tried to upload before the Shopping submission deadline but my ISP went down. Verrry frustrating. It is an image shot the same evening (one of six or so tries over 20 minutes that night) but tone mapped and without the architecturally disrespectful warping of the last image. Mea culpa to the original designers for my previous post in the Shopping Challenge and for what may have been the worst distortion of their iconic structure ever posted on-line. I think the structure is even more beautiful without the artificial distortion. (And I thought it appropriate to address the comment last time around and to show you don't have to take the clouds as you find them.)

Right again! And thank you again!

I just can't figure out how you can read the detailed description in the post processing info. when I can't even read it before the time for voting is finished.

Hehe this time I'm sure: hello, Jade! :-)
Really, this pic has gained a lot! I still like the distortion effect you applied to the other, but certainly this one is much more "strong", and of course sky has gained a lot too. Great colours all around.
I'm not so sure if it's "ethic" (forgive me, I don't know the proper word for what I want to say) to vote for a pic that has "almost" been submitted just before, knowing from whom it is... but I want to give you at least some points, because this is almost a text-book example of how to do tone mapping manually!! Thanks for so detailed description of your PP, really useful :-)
So, I'll make your pic my #7, good luck!!

rafinmelb, I think both images have some merit. Perhaps I should have toned mapped the warped image for the best of both worlds; but I still wanted the chance to display what the building truly looks like unwarped. Less funky perhaps but in my eye at least, sublimely beautiful for its place and a landmark for its time; it was built, after all, to be just a "common" grocery store. (As an aside, last night I found another newly constructed Metro store in Toronto, which pays hommage to this design with a faux front curve made of white meshed metal, purely decorative, placed in front of a standard box with a glass wall front, with the same arc radius as this structure. The effect viewed head on, is a strikingly similar reflection of this building.)

I kinda liked the warped look, but agree this is a stronger image

Thanks elliott. It's no Surfing with an Alien (which remains my favourite - I like surfing and I like aliens! - alas this is a more terrestrial reality and as close as I come to orbital journeys), but I had no time for more. I'm hoping to see your imagination at work in the fairy tale challenge.

I expect this "re-post" would not be welcomed by all. But I felt obligated to post a non-distorted version in deference to the original architects (and three challenges running concurrently didn't give me a lot of time to learn HDR and post another shot too).

Dear Jade I think the composition is ok...
And your attempt to do a sort of tone mapping is remarkable...But you could upload a new image insted of this!(I would want to see some other great pics from you!)
