Jack and the Beanstalk       ©2009 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       2nd place, 89 points
1/800s, f5, ISO 100, 35mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Four image composite, scenery, cloud, stalk, and Jack. Resized three images and trimmed images to isolate elements, perspective tool on the stalk, the castle is Castle Loma in Toronto. Jack is 5 years old and wearing sandals. Downsized, then sharpened. All in GIMP.       Extra Info: When he woke up, the room looked so funny. The sun was shining into part of it, and yet all the rest was quite dark and shady. So Jack jumped up and dressed himself and went to the window. And what do you think he saw? why, the beans his mother had thrown out of the window into the garden, had sprung up into a big beanstalk which went up and up and up till it reached the sky. So the man spoke truth after all.

The beanstalk grew up quite close past Jack’s window, so all he had to do was to open it and give a jump on to the beanstalk which was made like a big plaited ladder. So Jack climbed and he climbed and he climbed and he climbed and he climbed and he climbed and he climbed till at last he reached the sky. And when he got there he found a long broad road.... So he walked along and he walked along and he walked along till he came to a great big tall house,...
From Joseph Jacobs original English Fairy Tales.

Thank you Franz. I know from your forum post you are unsure about PP work, but I will tell you that the path that Jack is on, is just the way the cloud was in the photo. So the path is "real" and no PP to create it. Of course, I saw the chance to use that to put the castle and Jack where I did.

Thanks dodrizzt with full credit to Alberto for the challenge theme that lets the imagination go wild.

    Congratulations Jade O.
Finally I realized that the path through the clouds to the castle is really special.
Good work.

Thanks, Mepo and Una and all for your votes and especially your comments. I must say, I was inspired a while back by Elliott's Surfing with an Alien which, for me, is the ultimate blend of fantasy, photography, and a lesson in how to capture the essence of a moment in allegorical form. I hope one day to come close to achieving the level of perfection that Elliott did with that one image. This was a fun challenge. Thanks, Alberto (Boar76), and the admins for making it happen.

dodrizzt, you have my number! My one regret is that Jack had to be so small; he really is charming.

I love the mix of images, it must have been fun thinking it up. It also must have been a lot of work putting together so well. Congrats.

Lots of efforts here for a nice pic for the theme. Maybe the mix seems somewhat "forced", but I truly understand the difficulty of such a mixture. Great you pointed Jack is in the pic, at first sight I missed him :-)
Makes easily my #4 fav, and could be an easy winner even, well done!!
(Is this yours, Jade? remembers me the technic in your "train & wolf" pic, along with your great imagination :-)

Yes, that is Jack in the clouds.

Great idea, nice processing. Don't see Jack unless that's him in clouds approaching the castle, in my top 6.

Thanks, Thomas. I was pleased with how it turned out and how easy it was to do. I think the trick was getting the lighting right in the original four images.

Great stuff! Normally I prefer the more puristic style "one natural photo hits the theme" but with this picture you have done some impressive and good looking artwork.

Bill, you make me blush! Technically it is really simple; the key is GIMP and the ability to layer images, resize them, cut and paste them. My original idea was to capture an image of a white farm house from a small plane on a day with a thin scattered layer of cloud sitting about 1000 above ground but I soon realized I'd need to do the cloud and the aerial view separately and to take a shot from "further back". Unfortunately, Jack got a little small in the process!

From a compositional standpoint, I worked at getting the lighting right for each image/layer, and also to get your eye to follow a zig-zag path from foreground to background, bottom to top.

A true work of art and fantasy. Wish I had your technical skills. It is just brilliant!
