Thanks Franz - Yo man cool works for me :-) I also wish I could comment like Jade and Raf. This was an emotional experience for me and it was nice to share that. There was another photographer near me and he was impatient for the people to move away so he cold get a clean shot of the memorial. As Raf noted, it would not be as good without the people - I'm glad Billy thought up this subject for the challenge.

    Congratulations Mepo!
LOL! Reading the other comments I feel like Fonzie from "Happy Days". In comparison my comment sounds like "Yo, man. Cool!", while Raf and Jade celebrate an eloquent ceremony... :-D
Good job, dude! I like it.

Nice top ten double in a tough Challenge! Fine image and not just for the photography but for the meaning behind it.

Thanks Franz - not cold yet - our winter is only just starting. LOL This is the time of year when some Canadians seem to have to re-learn how to drive in the snow all over again.

Very good finding for the theme. The people add to an already interesting shot the extra info: "Brrr, phew! It's really cold here".

Raf - Many thanks for your observations. When I was composing this I looked at the figures in the memorial and thought about how the actual troops would have been covered in snow in the hell of trench warfare and was wondering if the people in the shot were sharing my thoughts. I did try straightening the memorial but it removed the sense of the hovering angles that I likes so much - to me they seemed to link the live group with the statues - guardians almost. Having you and Jade share my emotions with this shot makes the whole challenge worthwhile. Thank you.

p.s. I tried adjusting the perspective again but this time only took about half off - you are right - it does improve it.

Jade: You know how much I appreciate your remarks on my entries so this time you have blown me away. Your erudite commentary is very much appreciated, it amazes me how you have neatly summed up my feelings at the time I took the shot. I was hesitant about taking the photograph at all as I was afraid that I would intrude on the private moment that these people were sharing but then I thought it would be something that should be recorded and shared. I had a problem understanding 'conceived conceit' until I realized that you used conceit in the sense of manipulation which would be bang on ( I hope I got that right). Finally, your penultimate sentence sums up everything and more that I hoped the photograph would convey - Thank you.

In many ways this shot epitomiss this challenge. Taken without the figures this is a very solid shot with lovely winter tones and well composed. However we would probably pass it by quicklt. When you add the people it lifts the shot. We suddenly have an important additional element that not only fits compositionally (mirroring the statue groupings in a way) but also gives us an emotional kick. For these people it is important enough to be out in the snow to pay their respects.

The only, very minor, gripe I have is that the perspective tilt on the building is on the verge of becoming distracting.

I love this image. My first thought was is there any element that could have been better? The square frame compliments the "solid" subject matter. The composition is perfect from the high element on the left to the stepping down to the figures clustered on the right. The mass of the memorial is balanced beautifully by the massing of the building of a complimentary era and material in the background. The huddled human figures are dwarfed by the memorial itself as well as the clustered bronzes at the base of the memorial; they are dwarfed both in allegorical significance and in the reality of the relative disparity of physical size, yet the two massed groups compliment and play off each other as much as they contrast; the living and the dead is an appropriately and sensitively conceived conceit. The importance of the sacrifice of those now memorialized in bronze is suitably scaled to the representative few of the many whose legacy it is to stand here and enjoy the fruits of this life. A masterful image. (Directly on theme too.)
