#73 Single light in the night
Entry 9 of 20

Brute Power       ©2010 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       9th place, 46 points
1/2s, f3.2, ISO 200, 55mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Cropped, adjusted brightness & contrast, USM, re-sized       Extra Info: A streetlight above the snow plow is the main source of illumination, its yellowish color adding the only warmth at -13 C with a light wind to drive in the cold. Secondary (white) light provided by the blade spotlight housed inside the cab. This guy stopped to chat with the operator of a second plow and I got off 2 shots before he took off in a blurr (I caught that on film too). My battery power was dropping like a stone and my hands were literally blue. I used the self timer so that my shivering would not affect the camera.

Congratulations Michael. I like it very much - and I wonder if you could bring this big machine along for our trip to Tarra-Bulga, for which Rafael invited us?

Billy - I'm devastated; of all people I thought I could get you to vote for a big machine LOL

Many congrats Michael!! sorry no points from me this time but this was in my favs anyway... hard time choosing :-/
(P.S. I noticed the more than two light sources, but that didn't bothered me much here, as the main one was clearly dominant :-)

Your wife sounds like a wonderful and perceptive woman! Nice top ten finish in a tough Challenge!

Phillip - Thank you for the comment; I'm happy you liked it. I was afraid that many voters would miss the phrase about 1 or 2 light sources "as the principal illumination" and disqualify anything with more than 2 lights even if they were not providing the "principle illumination". Like you, I try to interpret the rules to let me include rather than exclude.

May have too many light sources to be strictly on subject but I think it qualifies as there is only a single visible light and it is definitely night. Too striking an image to be completely marked down. Very well ececuted shot for the conditions, good luck.

Jade. I forgot to say that my wife thought that this was your entry. I take that as a compliment. She thought that I was skipping this challenge but I went out when she was at exercise class and grabbed a couple of shots. Can't wait to see what her comments on my entries are LOL
Lo. Thanks for the comments:-)
Franz - Actually the operator is in the cab, and was talking with another operator on the other side of the grader (snow plow). These machines typically work in formation with a small sidewalk plow. If the parking meter expired I think he would just run it over LOL. Glad you liked it.
LaRee. Thank you. I find those pure white lights seem to emphasize the cold :-) This model (the 140H series) has about 20 levers in the cab to control the machine. The next model does it all with a joystick (maybe two - I forget). Amazing power to watch working.

This is a mighty bright scene to fit the theme. I know how the lights around these vehicles can be bright at night. Good find for the theme.

Ahh...! Now I remember - that's where I parked my dozer! Could you please turn the parking meter for me once? I'll pick it up later...

Seriously now - what a great finding! Perfectly on theme. Also technically very well done!

Great job on the lighting, and well done on the choice of subject. I don't think we give enough credit to the men and machinery that work day and night to keep our roads passable.

Thanks for your comment Jade. Yes the other plough (a sidewalk machine) was just off to the right. I did try darkening the housing but when the isolated plough lost its environment it did not look as good imo. As you said in a previous comment 'where does one stop in pp' - often a difficult decision.

Nicely timed and nicely photographed. I assume the other plough operator was on foot since I cannot detect another machine. The image is good with right colour and exposure, and wise use of timer. Now the challenge. Eliminate or minimize the background housing in PP by darkening or otherwise, and you'd have a truly outstanding plough image.
