Burger King       ©2010 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       13th place, 43 points
1/13s, f3.2, ISO 100, 53mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: 3 image HDR, adjust contrast, saturation, resize, sharpen       Extra Info: An iconic image of North American fast food - the nondescript "big box" store set alone in the oversized parking lot of the big box mall. This Burger King store is a display of commercial architecture at its most basic. With minimal attention to architectural detailing, virtually all elements are directed to functionality or brand identification. Facing the street with its back to the rest of the mall, and with a drive-thru in the place of prominence at the front of the store, the product boards that dominate the facade are subordinate only to the Brand Name. This tribute to post-war consumer society and the supremacy of the automobile reaches its zenith of expression here. The building is as unoffensively mundane as the food served within it.

(I was undecided about leaving the overhead wires in but in the end thought the wires tied in to the horizontal elements of the road and framed the expanse above the building; I'd be interested in having your thoughts.)

Akebono, like almost all of my entries, I started with an idea to shoot something else in the area then took advantage of a better opportunity that presented itself.
Three exposure images on a tripod, +/-2.0 and used Qtpfsgui to combine. Adjusted contrast and saturation to suit. I like Qtpfsgui because I can quickly process "mini" images to see what result looks best then go fuller size with which require the longer processing times.

    Hi Jade!

You asked me about how I did my (HDR) picture. Now I am curious to know how you did this one.

Cheers!

Akebono :-)

Jade - Thanks for your reply. I feel better having read it :-) I must have a go at this HDR stuff sometime - much as I hate it LOL And you are so right about the skill in photographing the mundane.

Billy, thank-you for the input. I like the composition and colour but was less sure about the wires and as Mepo points out, there are some other issues. Going for the ordinary is sometimes more difficult than going for the spectacular - I'm happy with the attempt but not with my HDR work. Always great to have your comments! :-)

Lo I left the wires in, in part because I didn't have time to take them out! I appreciate your point of view and thank you for taking the time to comment. I value your input too!

You have a very strong competence but finally I've decided that your pic will be in my TT, because I like the strong colours you've obtained with the HDR (nicely rendered, almost no haloing :-) and the "iconic" building, brave pic :-)
For me, the wires hurt a lot (ouch!), but don't trust me completely, part of my usual job is precisely cloning out wires and distractions from tons of pics, so I'm strongly biased towards that, better listen to all the other mates before deciding :-)

I love the vibrant colours. I agree that the wires should be left in to add to the realism. To coin an overused phrase, "It is what it is"

Michael, I am thrilled to finally get someone telling me why they don't like my photo and why they are not voting for it. I am even more thrilled to find someone's critique that matches my own almost exactly. The thumbnail looks promising but the full size image fails to deliver on so many technical grounds, not least of which are those you mention (though I would add the blown highlights especially in an HDR and that excessive red bleed - notice how it obscures the tree branches completely). Unfortunately, I left this Challenge too long and ran out of time so no attempt for a reshoot. But for your comment, thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. At least I know why one person didn't vote for this one. Mind you I do like the composition - I thought dead centre complimentary for the mundane.

If this is not by Jade then I apologize. My comments are made because Jade (like myself) appreciates knowing why people choose not to vote for a given entry.

I like this photo as a thumbnail since I see all of the positives - great blues and balanced trees with orange headers and other light areas in the middle. In the full size shot I find the image is blurred in part. For example the edges of the red areas seem to bloom into the adjacent colours. The orange box hiding the winners store has no texture and I can't tell what it is - not that it matters, it is just distracting. I don't think the HDR worked here but I am biased against that technique. It is difficult for me to voice these opinions and I hope no offense is taken - non intended.

a good night shot and at first glance did not see the overhead lines but agree with you they work in the framing. does the caption on the right give a clue as to the result.
