Reflections of Faith       ©2010 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       10th place, 61 points
1/13s, f2.8, ISO 200, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Layers, clone, crop, resize.       Extra Info: As the day draws to a close, a Russian Orthodox Priest pauses while ministering to an elderly parishioner in a nearby home, to gaze at his Church which is reflected in both the glass window of that home and in his eyes.

In the eyes of the Christian faithful, the Church building in all its forms serves both in the practical purpose of a communal gathering place as well as in providing a physical declaration and affirmation of that Faith. At its upmost, it forms not only a part of the landscape but also a part of the context of the physical and spiritual lives of its members, functioning as both a temporal and a spiritual point of reference.

(I hope you agree with me that buildings can have a meaning beyond themselves, their mere existence, and that my attempt to illustrate this here meets the requirements of this Challenge topic.)

Congrats on your TT Jade, although I really thought this will finish higher, I still think is a super shot :-)
I've missed the church! meh! :-/ I found there are really a lot of Ukranian-stile churches all around Toronto, and started searching for the correct one... when I found the other I thought I had it, so stopped searching... bad choice, bad choice LOL :-D

Bye the bye (said with a Neufie accent) - thanks for the compliment in thinking I had taken the shot by LO. Given my placing I wish I had :-D My job was to hold off the mounties while she took the shot!

Michael It was a fun Challenge but once again I left it too late - as you saw, the weather also did not help in the final two weeks of the Challenge.

Thank you all for your votes and your comments. Each one is appreciated.

Alberto, thanks! That colour is one reason why I'm so adverse to sunset shots!

Michael, thank you for an interesting topic. I only wish I had started on it earlier when the weather was good. (BTW all the layered images were taken in the Challenge period and I didn't even have to visit a zoo this time! The face was taken close up under an incandescent light for that sunset glow! LOL!)

Billy, tried to stand out from the crowd with an original take but maybe too far from a simple building shot for many voters. Nice detective work but this is St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, on Markham Road in Toronto. Their webstie has a photogallery: http://www.stspeterandpaul.com/index.htm To get under the hydro wires I had to back up a bit to take the shot. I'll post the original image in outtakes in the forum so you can see how far removed this image is from the original.

Lo, I found the eyes a bit disturbing myself (Rasputin comes to mind)!

forkcandles I worked hard for the reflections - more challenging than I thought.

Thank you for adding a whole new dimension to the challenge. I believe you got some high quality votes. Now if only it had been blue LOL

With this kind of imagination so beautifully translated into an image I immediately think of Jade. Please accept this as a compliment if I'm wrong about the artist. Of course it is way off the challenge topic - just kidding - it's in my top 5.

I agree :-) In fact, in a challenge that is very well accomplished, with all entries "on theme", I'm looking for that extra "emotional touch" or different approach, to decide my favorites. Yours have both, so is in my TT, and in fact, is my #3, after a very tough decision, could be easily my #2 or #1 (pity I can't make a tie-vote). Very, very original and elegant take on theme, superbly resolved in PP as usual...
... Jade :-D
Difficult to spot you this time ;-) Despite the superb layering inmediatelly called for you, this could also easily be one of Melanija's beautiful multi-pics that I also like a lot, and that Russian church was a very disguising point... I had to google deeply, but I found that you have some very nice Ukranian-style churches in your zone... maybe that one is the Holy Protection of the Mother of God Church? seems that :-)
(ehm... if not Jade, this is a huge cumpliment on your imagination, technic... and camouflage abilities :-)

I think this is a really creative idea. At first I found the eyes a bit overpowering, but on closer inspection I saw the reflection of the church in them, and they've become almost mesmerizing.

Awesome and excelleant use of what digital can do for the photographer
I think it meets all reqirements as a building picture as it also shows its human side and with the skilled reflections we have three buildings
