Congratulations Michael. A beautiful picture and a deserved winner.
About everything is perfect here. A real keeper.

ThingFish - Thank you. Love your pic - the old loco even looks cold in your shot. I'm glad to see it has not been vandalized the way mine has. Bye the way your bird of paradise flower is my favourite although I also loved the potato farmers - that must have been a lot of fun setting up. Slainte (cheers) Michael

p.s. Many years ago I used to sell Leica cameras and got a chance to use and test their products. I've been a fan of Leica glass ever since. The association with Leitz is the main reason I bought my FZ30 and I have not been disappointed.

That's great Michael. Congratz on the win. It might interest you to know that i have a very similar shot I took a few months ago here in Holland. Mine is called "Out Of Steam" I took it with the Panny L1
If you would like to see it here is the link.

Congratulations - This is such a powerful shot, especially rendered in black and white, that I was sure it would do well.

Very well done indeed. The B/W treatment is spot on and a worthy winner.

Thank you all for your very supportive comments and your votes. I was very nervous putting in my first B&W. I have a special joy at seeing this #1 as I felt that in some ways it was my tribute to some beautiful machinery design and many hardworking engineers and stokers. Someone once said that a steam engine is so special because (unlike anything else) you can SEE the power.

Nice job with this shot. I like choo choos. Congratulations on the win. Thanks for the comment on my shots. I, along with some others, are wondering how you ID'd me. I did not think I had a discernable style. Well, perhaps style is not the right word. ;-)

Congratulations Michael! Very superb image! But I was not able to vote in the main, my votes for the open did not registered. Erratic days for me. :D

I love this image. The low angle makes it very imposing. Good to see you win again, I liked the last challenge you picked. Cheers!

Franz: Thank you for your comment. It is much appreciated. I grew up with English trains but I fell in love with these beauties the first time I saw one - they are enormous!!

Billy: Many thanks. I've taken many train pics (I like trains also) but this is the first time I've used such a low angle. It won't be the last. I loved the colour shot until I saw the B & W.

Beautiful train image (I always like train pics :-), very nice... I like a lot the low angle you used, gives a strong impression of "brute power". Also like the BW, works well (but I would like to see the colour version too :-) and is nicely on theme... all of that makes your pic being in my TT, after a very hard time deciding among a great competition, well done!! :-)

Mike - Thanks for the vote. Glad you liked it. Maybe I should have tried a vignette.

A great shot of a steam locomotive and disconnected in so many ways.
What more could you want? It steamed into my top three.

Forkcandles - Right on - I wanted to use this as my screen saver and since the sky was so blue I tried the colour version - BLAH ! This was my first B&W since I used to develop & print them - I think I've found an old love.

Old Finn - I'm blown away that you have chosen my entry once again. That is very encouraging. You are obviously a gentleman of exquisitely good taste :-)

black and white rules for these mammoths, they make the modern engine look like toys. Engineers drove these not drivers. lovely picture but maybe a darker contrast?

Jade - High praise indeed - thank you. Now about the emotional connection . . . you can see I did not have enough room to tie the damsel across the tracks LOL.

A nicely composed and executed image. I find it a fine technical study but does not make an emotional connection with me. Still, it ends up with my #4 vote.
