Panasonic DMC-FZ30       5th place, 99 points
1/125s, f5.6, ISO 100, 101mm, Aperture Priority, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Increased saturation, brightness & contrast to counter the smoke. Combined two photos to get the best result. USM.       Extra Info: The sky is totally grey. Forest fires have put a blanket of smoke over the city for days. I would have liked to see some blue sky or clouds in the photo but they are blotted out by the smoke. Every morning at the start of the work day I see my neighbors walking their dogs regardless of the weather.

Your road is going thermonuclear and you are worried about the smoke?! ;-0 Nice shot and nice top five finish!

Billy: Thank you - I thought I might be able to hook you with the human interest :-) "Great minds think alike - Fools seldom differ."

Lovely shot for sure, the colours are great, I don't mind the white smoked sky here, and the human element rounds the composition and adds the extra interest... a great shot for sure, finally my #3 but I wish I could vote a tie among my 4 top pics. Bravo!!

Old Finn: Thank you. I always appreciate your comments & support. You are right - it was difficult to balance. I have a new 24" LCD monitor and it certainly gives a different result than others that I view.

You have done good work with the picture. Maybe a bit too much saturation in my monitor. I understand you needed more colors in the middle of the grayness of all the smoke.
Anyway, one of my favorites.

...but on the plus side, the smoke haze also adds to the golden sunrise which is reflected off the power lines and the tar on the road as well, so to me it helps add to the scene, the pic has a very "real" hometown feel about it too...good work on this one!

fk: Many thanks. There were 43 forest fires burning to the North. More than 1500 firefighters working on the job - including some from our friends from the USA - all assisted by water bombers. So far about 109Km sq of forest have been lost and the smoke has caused smog alerts as far away as Boston (500m away ). Our city fire services were kept busy by hundreds of false alarms as people woke up smelling smoke.

    Jade: Merci beacoup
Franz: Dank - the human touch was what I was looking for.
LaRee: Much appreciated. I'm glad you got the feeling out of it. Our neighborhood is a mix of wartime homes, apartments and deluxe houses. We have a diverse and interesting mix of people and it is (most times) very peaceful and friendly.

What a wonderful road home! This has such a peaceful feeling. I love the light on the road too.

Very nice lighting. Obviously a great treatment.
Great shot with a special human touch.

The lighting and the elements here bring the necessary focus and impact to this shot. Not an element which should not be there or which should be eliminated.

raf - Thank you. It's one of those roads that always catches the morning sun and makes everything look better (even the road repairs:-)
Una. My thought exactly. I tried your suggestion but it destroys the rule of thirds unless I also crop the top off.

When I see your picture I think of the beginning of a new beautiful day. The picture is full of positive attitude. (I think I would have cropped part of the tarmac in the foreground.)
