Coincidentally I went to the Museum of Nature last weekend and they have this enormous Loon in there. The eyes were just as you have depicted. Sorry about IDing this as from LaRee. It was meant as a compliment as she does some amazing work. I am sure this would have finished higher but I suspect many voters might have downgraded it due to the 'backyard' criteria.

Hope to see more of your work. Slainte.

I'm so excited to see this entry is from you! Welcome! No epi-pen required for this one. As Mepo says, I've seen plenty of loons but their eyes always looked black to me. Still, Audubon would have been proud! Hope you keep up now that you have taken the plunge (so to speak!) And what a backyard!

The haunting cry of the Loon is something few people would ever forget. I have heard and seen them often but never up close. When you try to get close, they dive and stay underwater forever (so it seems)! So I know it takes a lot to get this shot. I marvel at the camouflage and it all makes the shot more meaningful for me. Excellent photo - LaRee is my guess but that is meant as a huge compliment.

Wow you have Loons in your backyard?!? That is awesome! Good work on this image too. I'm envious that you have this kind of wildlife in your backyard!

I have to agree about the unnatural look of the eye, but this is how loon's eye's look. The only post processing to this image was a small crop. Perhaps I should have done a little "red eye" reduction? LOL! :-)

Amazing Audubon like image but in the same way, it appears almost unreal. There is something about the eye that appears unnatural.
