Matthew in a circle       ©2010 forkcandles
Panasonic DMC-GH1       8th place, 52 points
1/80s, f22, ISO 100, 58mm, Aperture Priority, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: resized and contrast       Extra Info: The Matthew ship plate within a rope cheese. Bristol Ships had a circle plate with name and date. These were attached to the ship and the owners would have a copy to go on the boardroom wall.

fc - Go back and take it again at f5.6 and I think you will be amazed at the increase in definition. Can you lift the plate off and ship it to me - I want it on my wall beside my dartboard? LOL Love it.

Many thanks for the comments which are much appreciated
Mepo the rope end is whipped, due to the 'plastic' rope the end are cut with a hot knife. the whipping is the simple version and is only to stop the sealed end from breaking.
I was going to use the shot with more rope but due to my poor eyesight the ship plate was not leveland this would have spoilt the rope if I had straigtened it.
I used the f22 to help get the sharpness, I still gettingused to the tracking system on the GH1

Great finding, circles everywhere, nicely captured.
It was a very good choice to use b&w. Nice contrast and lighting.

A very nice B/W of a fascinating subject, and plenty of circles too. A definite top 3 for me. Just a pity the plate isn't centred on the depth.

I realize the tied off end of the rope at the bottom is a distraction but cropping off to the bottom of the circle would not be an answer.
I would have probably lowered the framing to include more of the rope at the bottom which I think would lessen the viewer's being attracted to the 'commotion' going on at bottom center.
Well done very well captured.

good light and contrast, i just want to see more of the rope circles. maybe something more included to give indication of size. el

A really interesting photo for the theme. I think that taking it in black and white was a great choice, as it brings out the texture of the rope so well.

Nice choice of subject; well presented in B&W. Love the rope cheese but sad to see it is taped and not whipped properly at the end. I'm puzzled that you chose f22 for this. Perhaps you would get more definition in the rope at a more modest f stop. I love the texture you have captured on the medallion - almost 3D.

I'm probably weird but I really like the texture on the rope as much as the plate and would probably have liked a bit more of it. Curiously why F22 where DOF is a non-issue? Normally you would go for the lens sweet spot which normally happens somewhere near the middle of the range.
