mr sawyer - we share the same black thumb LOL My friends have banned me from watching any hockey game where their team is playing:-)

Jade - Flattery will get you everywhere. It is amazing how often complete strangers pick me out as an expert photo technician - many of them are young women :-DDD I thought it was just my incredible good looks but my wife tells me it is because I carry around such large equipment LOL

Two mounties - two TF's! Unfortunately, mrsawyer voted you #1, LOL! Wait a sec, did raf say funny costumes? ---doesn't he know he's dissing a Disney trademark - true and not so funny. However, I sense Watson managed to get a little chuckle at Holmes' expense here though, ROTFLMHO!!! (Not sure what I would have said if this had turned out to be from Lo though! 8-O) I would have had some splaining to do! Anyway, you are a fine goodwill ambassador and a very good sleuth - and not bad behind the camera either!)

Congrats on your top 5 finish. I chose you for my #1 and thus ruined your chances.

fc. Thanks for the comment. Don't feel sorry for Ike - he has more photos than you and me put together. He and his stablemate have a stall in the shade just off the hill. His rider and his groom pamper him like the star that he is. I noticed that after they brushed the Maple Leaf logo onto his flank, he turned and looked at it as if he was approving the work LOL

Bill - Many thanks for your comment. Hard to compose a shot as I was in the midst of a busload of tourists. However it was my intention to include the photog to stress that the photo was about tourism rather than the location. Not sure that makes sense or whether it was the right choice :-D

An iconic shot and almost a snap or post card were it not for the photographer in the picture. Great expressions and nicely composed. Definitely tourism themed and in my top 5.

Jade: I have to say I find your complaints both surprising and impractical, especially as they come from someone whose intellect and capability I admire.

I can't imagine that you are suggesting that I should have "nudged him to the right a step or two”. Or “pulled the two visitors out of the frame to capture the perfect horse and rider angle” . I consider their presence in the frame to be critical to what I was trying to achieve as a 'tourism' entry.

Maybe you are not advising that I physically move the subjects but I don't see how else your suggestions could be put into effect.

Your complaint that “you somehow managed to have arches growing out of the heads of both horse and rider” could probably be addressed if I stopped the busload of tourists from taking photos and asked the RCMP officer to move to another location. Maybe if you had been there we could have made the earth move to achieve a new background :-)

I made several visits to the hill in search of this photo and was never able to get my 'perfect' shot. I did miss several opportunities as I was busy taking pictures of tourists with their own cameras or helping them set their cameras properly. Their thanks and obvious appreciation was more rewarding to me than any shot I could have made for the challenge.

I expect some might object to the clipped foreground subject and suggest he should be all in or all out.

For me, you cropped and framed nearly perfectly; he makes this image and draws the viewer in as a participant and not just an outsider looking in. The purity of red and black bring the viewers attention to where it should go and the rule of thirds rules here!

My only complaint is that somehow, you managed to lose the back legs of the horse, which is a pity since he seems to be "ungrounded" or floating on the back end. Oh, and you somehow managed to have arches growing out of the heads of both horse and rider, a shoe growing out of a horse's hip, and a hoof growing out of a person's knee. I think a slight rotation of shooting position to the right might have preserved the shot though I will surmise the real problem is the amateur photog in the foreground who is just shooting this from the wrong angle! I might have nudged him to the right a step or two, or alternately pulled the two visitors out of the frame to capture the perfect horse and rider angle.

In my top ten for sure.

Old Finn: Thank you. I wanted to express tourism as opposed to holidays. I figured that staying on theme was one way to get your vote LOL

A Gal - THANK YOU :-D :-D Happy that I hit a chord :-) The horse's name is "Ike". He is a retired veteran of the RCMP Musical Ride. He probably considers that smiling would not be dignified LOL He has incredible patience with tourists (and photographers).
raf - Thanks; always an extra boost to get a compliment from someone with your ability. I don't understand the 'chopped off hat' comment - I didn't do anything to the Mountie's hat or it's shadow ??

This is P E R F EC T!!!!! The only way it would say tourist more would be if the people had shirts with "Tourist" printed on the front! I think you have yourself a winner here! VERY nice! (Why isn't the horse smiling too? LOL!)

Man got it all. Tourists, tourists cameras, funny costumes and monument. One minor (very minor) quibble is the chopped off hat. Otherwise terrific get for this challenge.

Postscript: I looked at this scrolled up. Sorry, even nicer now without the chopped off hat!
