Silo 2       ©2010 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       6th place, 85 points
1/200s, f5.6, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash

Post-Processing: Uncropped, HDR, saturation, resize, sharpen, minor clone.       Extra Info: There's something universal about ruins which stir childhood memories in me and awaken a child-like imagination - the Hoover Dam, Galileo's wonderment at the celestial motion of the planets, the Silk Road to China, great towering fortresses guarding a foreign people and the treasures of a sultan, vast deserts, exotic lands, high mountain passes, journeys, adventure - all appearing before my eyes in an abandoned silo.

(Or maybe it's time to check the side effects of that new prescription again...)

Congratulations Jade. I like this one a lot!

Many congrats Jade!! As I told you in Main, I preferred better the other take, not for the composition/point of view, as this one is also very original, but for the PP... nice job on the shadows, but the haloing at the sky still makes my eye a bit "uncomfortable"... a nice pic anyway :-)

Congratulations on your TT win, Jade. (Where do you find this stuff???? LOL! )

mrsawyer By uncropped I was just trying to indicate that this was the shot as framed in camera, not an image that I later cropped to get this framing.

congrats on your top 10 finish. To add to the debate, I do like this one better than silo 1. By the way, what do you mean by "uncropped" in your post-processing?

Thanks for all your votes and comments. Each one is appreciated.

Una. Thanks. The most interesting part of this Challenge for me is to see how some picked Silo 1 as their clear favourite an others Silo 2. I think is superior photographically and in interest yet I thought Silo 1 would score higher.

I definitively prefer this one to Silo 1. In my TT.

Well, Michael, I personally prefer this one, but it seems opinion is divided on the angle and the PP.

Personally I would check the prescription :-) Your other entry (I Presume) was my top choice. This one I can't warm to. The sky seems over-processed with a halo outlining the silo - and you missed a bit through the hole. Amazing how much difference a few steps can make.

Thanks, Lo. I'll post the unretouched version in outtakes so you can see what the regular blue looks like. For me, the HDR effect was essentially for dramatic impact; you'll see the lighter blue in the original too but I do not know why the lighter blue stayed as light as it did with HDR.

I really love the angle on this shot, and the way it brings out the texture of the cement. It makes for a very powerful image. I'm not sure about the dark blue sky, especially with the lighter blue creeping through the break in the concrete, but it certainly adds drama!

Franz Glad to see you like the glow as much as I do. Yes, it is obvious but in this instance, I think it adds. (Just kidding about the prescription - that is there to throw Mepo off the trail.)

elliott/raf I'll post the non-HDR in outtakes and then you can give me your opinion - I think the image without the HDR is not so good.

fc I like this better too but thought the HDR more obvious.

Cool angle that gives special interest to your shot and a "dirty" look. Very good composition too. Even the border-glowing from the hdr treatment, that I normally hate on my LX3, works nicely and adds to the look.
The extra info is great! LOL!!!

Wonderful point of view that makes you want to look again and again.

PP is a weak point here for me. In the main entry there were a couple of minor issues, here they are intrusive and distract from the wonderful perspective.

i like this. will probably be my number one choice. composition/perspective is intriguing and makes the photo. but, forget the hdr. it makes it overworked and a distraction in my opinion.
