Thanks for the comments and votes.
Jade - I. I'm going to do it again looking straight down and making the photo a pattern as you suggested. And thank you for highlighting my educational shortcomings LOL
elliot - the queen has a circle on top to show she can move in any direction.

fc I'm flattered. Actually I taught Michael everything he knows! (except for what Lo can take credit for and what Michael has taught himself - let's see by process of simple arithmetic that means he learned 0.01% from me!)
Congrats, to the master in making top 5!

No question this has punch but what a challenging subject to get all the range of shades from light to dark in proper adjustment. As it is, I find the shadows and blacks in the black pieces to be melding together which I assume is unintentional. You have successfully managed to keep the whites separated and I did calibrate my monitor. My guess is that because so many monitors are not well calibrated, this one may not do as well in the voting in the result. If there were a top 10 for technical difficulty, you would make my ranking for sure! As for the subject, I think the shot is taken from too conventional an angle for my taste. I think a shot at board level with these wonderfully dramatic pieces could really have been exceptional. As it is, the subject notwithstanding, photographically, with the full board and central positioning framing, I do not think this otherwise very well executed technically shot will make my top ten. I wonder if you had cropped the sides to make a checkerboard diamond on square frame with each corner of the board touching each of the four sides of the frame, you might have achieved a diamond pattern to mimic the pieces on the board. That would have made my top ten!

Hmmm, just when I was about to vote, I noticed a King and Queen were not set on the proper squares at the game's beginning. Argh .... Chess aside, i think it is a fantastic photo. In my TT.

a quiz and a competion which leads me to jadeO if not this is a compliment.
the clean lines make this one for me and in top 5
I think the answer is in the black king in wrong square?
ps chess not my strong game.
