Styrofoam Coffee Cup Crime Scene       ©2010 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       4th place, 127 points
1/4s, f2.8, ISO 80, 35mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Clone out minor dust specs, resize, vignette bottom centre using black layer, sharpen       Extra Info: O.k. so a body in the street is serious yet even in the world of the styrofoam cup people, littering is not the worst crime. And here, like everywhere else, coffee and police on patrol are often seen together. (Only one cup was injured in the making of this shot. Playful as this is, I did give some thought to the lighting to create a sort of film noir look; I welcome any comments plus or minus.)

Thank you for all your votes and comments. I very pleased this entertained - it was a fun shot to set up - and quick - from idea to execution in under an hour.

Thank you Franz, for a delightfully challenging Challenge. Police and coffee just go together here in Toronto, and it was a small step to Crime Scene from there.

LOL! Wonderful! This idea is marvelous! Macabre but so funny...
"...the mood that you associate with coffee..." Oh oh, LOL. Your imagination learned to fly.

An unusual setup that draws me in to look at it more closely. It does not shout coffee for me but is in my tt for originality and humour.

Michael LOL! A dozen and a half insulating coffee cups, spilled coffee, and a police cruiser and you don't think coffee! Are you really from Canada???!!! LOL! (Edit - I KNEW I should have put a timbit on top of the crushed casualty - now don't tell me that wouldn't have screamed coffee!!!)

LaRee, I am really pleased it made you smile; I hoped it would be fun and funny!

Lo, Thanks. The lighting was the tricky part but the real technical excellence was in the set up. The police yellow line tape is gift ribbon just the right thickness and gold, not yellow, to work here colour wise, and getting the left cup to lean (there is always one at the edge of the crowd trying to see around the others) was an effort - it required taping a thick nail to the inside top of the cup since all tries at under support showed on camera. The guys popping their heads up at the back of the crowd were easy - just a crumpled tissue under them.

piman Pleased to know it worked for you and looked real enough. Dealing with the abstract or representative objects, sometimes you miss the mark.

elliott Thanks! Me, too! (It makes this work, I think.)

LOL! What a fun image! I love the thought process an you've pulled it off technically well. I like the playfulness of this entry without being overly post processed to achieve the impact.

Love the humour in this - and the technical excellence! The lighting is perfect, so is the choice of surface to get optimum reflection. Please don't tell us the butler did it!
