Silence       ©2011 Mepo
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       3rd place, 134 points
1/400s, f5.6, ISO 80, ?, Aperture Priority, Center Weighted Average, no flash

Post-Processing: From RAW to B & W. Adj levels, usm       Extra Info: The blanket of snow produces a beautiful silence. I greatly admire the work of the pioneers who carved these fields out of the wilderness. The split log rail fences were built from the trees cut down to clear the land and the rocks along the fences were also removed from the fields by hand.

Thanks Jade - I'm blushing. Your HDR comments were right on as usual - you caught me at a time when I had seen HDR after HDR and had just read 'Why I don't do HDR' in DPS. Ditto for the FZ-30 - wonderful machine & I don't see any replacement on the horizon.

Lo - Thank you - I always finish well ROFLOL

Way to go MEPO - good choice to finish it in B&W

This image truly deserved to be in the top 3. My HDR comment was only mean to say the blacks were not as black and the whites not as white as a result of the limited range of a digital camera. You really have a tough range of shades from brightest to darkest captured very well here. Full credit to show what a wonderful tool the FZ-30 is in the right hands! (ie. Full credit to the photog who knew best how to use it here!) I'll bet 9 of 10 viewers would think this was shot by a pro with a pro DSLR with some really expensive glass on it. Congrats!

Thank Billy. Glad you enjoyed the extra info. Some of the pioneers would spend years clearing the land like this but would never be able to get a good crop because some land was infertile. They would the be starved off their land.

    Very beautiful and well captured.
Nothing like an old log fence to capture the essence of winter.

I like the traditional feeling in the pic. I almost hear the silence. Well done, nr 2 in my favorites.

Jade - There was no 'vast' - what you see is what you get LOL. HDR reminds me of the S & G song 'Kodachrome' - make life something it is not. This looked great in colour but it did not transmit the cold and lonely feeling I was looking for. To paraphrase " Moma please take that HDR away" As always, your comments are much appreciated.

Great split rail fence shot. I do think a wider angle would have had more impact as the vastness of the space is not fully exploited here. The tonal range is good but I think some HDR might have really added pop to this one. Easily in my TF picks.

What jet trails? That was a Sopwith Camel - the pilot was smoking a big cigar LOL. Thanks for the comment, I'm glad someone feels the same way about these old fences.

I can hear the silence and what stories the fences could tell. The jet trails don't impede on to the picture, they give a modern touch as this picture timing is the snow.
Well done.
