Thanks Billy - Come and visit Ottawa, and we'll find you a pair of skates! great idea about the mini pics. Mrsawyer - both you and Jade found the foreground distracting, and I think you may have hit the nail on the head re: distance. Unfortunately, to get a sense of the size of the canal, and hopefully add interest, I had to take the shot through the bridge railing.

The foreground fence is distracting to me. I think it is the great distance from the fence to the subject that is the issue.

I've seen this (very enjoyable) place before :-D Nice you've moved around to get another point of view with the wall as a frame. And of course, nice for the theme too, I would enjoy winter a lot with a place like this to skate!
(May I add a humble suggestion? clone out the partially "chainsawed" people on the borders of the wall, I think that could create an effect of something like "independent worlds", or mini-pics, inside each gap of the wall :-)

Thanks for commenting - Thought I'd do a different take on a much photographed attraction in Ottawa

Beautiful sunny day, great shooting angle through a stone 'viewer' makes a very beautiful winter scene.

Well composed, good sharpness, nice colors, interesting frames. In my favorites.

I find the foreground an overwhelming (and out of focus) distraction from an otherwise interesting winter scene.

So much going on in the picture. The bridgework give depth of field and framing as well.
