I actually downloaded your entry and cloned out the bottom left - it really did nag at my mind. Once I saw the trompe l'oeil I could not stop from looking at it, so I wanted to see the shot without it. I've always been fascinated by what our brain chooses to see or not to see. I've often taken what I thought was a great shot and been happy with it (often until other people tell me how or what they see). This site has helped me improve by seeing what others will see. It's not that I'm trying to please others, it's just nice to be able to share the sensations or emotions of the moment.

Thank you all for your votes and especially your comments!
Una Special thanks for saying what you did not like. I value those comments as much as the kudos since I have some idea why I did not get your higher vote.
Billy Technically perfect is a great compliment though I'm not sure fully deserved here. This looks gorgeous full size on my new HD monitor but alas, loses a lot scaled down.
Michael Never saw the trompe l'oeil effect until you mentioned it, probably because at larger scale the ice under the rail is an obvious continuum. I thought the rail was needed for depth so I especially having appreciate your constructive criticisms in that and your other suggestions as well. Thank you.
Lo Crisp it was with that wind!

Ahhh, is that the star master again? :-) In my favourites although I wouldn't think of "season" when I would see it under different circumstances.

Night pics are always hard to take properly, so an extra credit for you because this one is beautifully done, with those lights adding colour to the ice covered water. Pity the small screen format, I'm sure this pic would be very enjoyable printed at a large size for eye-wandering around the small details on the port and ships.
Maybe is not so eye-catching as others in the challenge, but for me is a nice TT for the theme, technically perfect. Well done!! :-)

Interesting trompe l'oeil, bottom left, that makes the ice surface look like a marble slab table top. That railing is distracting and I don't think it is required to add depth. I think I would prefer to see more concentration/detail on the ships on the left. But perhaps that would destroy the rendition of the ice surface which is beautifully achieved. 2s must have been the exact right timing for the smoke and clouds.

I like the crop, the crispness and the bold dark colours

Thanks, fc. It was VERY cold with a strong nor'easter eating me alive. But it was also magically beautiful. At full resolution, this is a gorgeous photo. Reduced to this size you have barely a sense of the vastness of the expanse of this place.

What a result with a difficult night shot, the cold off the water would not have helped.
