raf I think says it best. It challenges all sorts of photo concepts. A truly original piece of work. The four second places says both that you have something and that what you have isn't widely recognized or appreciated - hence it must be good!!!

I am going to go back to my tens of thousands of missed bird shots to see if I have something like this. I quite like it. It speaks of the disappearing of warmth as winter comes. Now I would love to know that you meant this shot, but it is enough that you recognised it when you saw it.

I love most of all the fact that you entered this one. Most would toss it as a missed shot. That was my first impression but I thought a bit more and for certain, you may think me crazy, this ia gallery quality! Technically it is pure and every element is necessary. Fewer branches and vegetation would leave too bare a canvass, especially with the escaping subject. Too much more, and the canvass would be crowded and overpowered. And there is no doubt who the subject is. The wing and tail are caught wonderfully in flight with no distracting feet or other parts. We know what has happened an instant before this shot and by having your subject almost entirely off frame, you bring a kinetic energy and movement to this shot which you could not otherwise have captured. The temptation is to think, "missed shot" but I see you cropped and I'll bet for those whose votes you do not get, if they saw this hanging in a high end photo gallery in New York, they would stop and think and ponder. To me, this is near the pinnacle of what is so hard to achieve in photography, a refreshingly new interpretation of a commonly photographed subject. It challenges so many concepts of what a photograph is and what it presents to a viewer. For that reason alone, all of its technical merit aside, it is a contender for my no. 1 position -- together with a handful of others. I have never had as many 1st place picks in a Challenge before this one. A thought provoking shot no matter how it ends up in my ranks! Congrats!
