Kick-Out Bunny Hop       ©2011 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       11th place, 31 points
1/1000s, f2.8, ISO 200, 36mm, Manual, Spot, no flash

Post-Processing: Crop, clone out minor background distracting elements, resize, duplicate layer, desaturate and invert top layer then set top layer to multiply, adjust top layer opacity, curves, flatten. The bike rider and surrounding objects were captured on the original image as you see them. The PP is to add a little "rad" in keeping with BMX culture. (That's rad as in radical, as in "Too rad for mom 'n' dad.")       Extra Info: Definitions:
bunny hop v. to lift both wheels off the ground by crouching down and then exploding upward, pulling the bike with you. Useful for clearing obstructions, such as curbs, potholes, logs.
Sometimes followed by a crotch-testing n. sudden impact between a male rider's private parts and something very hard and pointy, such as a handlebar
stem or seat.

Lo, I agree the PP is a bit of a miss. See outtakes for the original and maybe a better try using raf's suggestion to push it more.

Great shot, lots of action and well composed. Not sure I like the rad PP, but I'm sure the guy on the bike would be thrilled with his picture.

Thanks, OOF. Maybe I'll post the original in outtakes and ask for suggestions.

raf Something didn't work here and mostly I think it is just too dark and oddly static for an action shot - taken at 1/1000s in overcast just a half hour before sunset, the fz-30 struggles. But I think my PP is not up to the challenge; I think another photog more skilled in PP could do more with this than I achieved here.

I should add compositionally, I think it works, as the base and jumper form a sort of pyramid but I still feel I failed miserably with a great subject to work with.

fc Thanks!

Nice capture of a difficult subject with the POV working to minimise (successfully) what looks like a fairly ordinary background. The PP does not work for me at all here. I get the desire to add a touch of the youth aesthetic to this but the choice of how to do that did not quite make it, partially I think because the track bit does not have anything applied to it. Perhaps something even more radical?
