All that hoisting of astrolabes would certainly strengthen one's drinking arm. I can't really comment on his inability to navigate - after all, I couldn't even get the date of his arrival right.

Actually, about that astrolabe -- it's a little known fact that (i) this sculpture inspired Stanley Kubrick to create the character Moon-Watcher, except he realized the astrolabe would be an anachronism, so he substituted a femur and the rest is cinematic history (ii) long before NBA players did it, Champlain learned to spin a globe on his finger tip, and (iii) Champlain's pose was inspired by the tale of his spirited demeanor following the on-board New Year's Eve festivities of 1605-1606 and his inability to steer straight for a few days after, which resulted in his founding of Quebec City somewhat north of his intended landing site near present-day Jacksonville, Florida (incidentally that same night he reportedly founded the Order of Good Cheer and the Canadian Astronomical Sobriety - citation needed.)

    Congrats Lo, way to go!
(a subtle reference to GPS/Astrolabe!)

Congratulations - great shot - especially considering the models you had to work with.

I have to mention one important fact. The sculptor put the astrolabe in Champlain's hand upside down. It should be suspended from the hand. The needle is supposed to swing with gravity to allow reading of the correct angle.

I'm blown away too! Who is that guy with the GPS stuffing silk gloves in his pocket? I'll have to call Sherlock and get him right on it!!! Congrats!

Thanks for the comments. It's funny how Panachallenge takes you to places you've never been before, even if they're in your own back yard. Now that we've seen the view from the top of this lookout, I'm sure we'll be going back.
Jade - you're right, it was a tough shot to guage, and the sun was fading fast as I was trying to capture the last few rays

So much to like and not like. Composition and framing are good but a little crowded at the top. Lighting is warm but the sky gradient is a little too washed/blown at the bottom. Great contrasting figures but still a very very static (dead) image - I feel like I'm viewing a tombstone. Also a little soft in focus on the human figure and a little dark on the statue. Tough tough shot to balance between the silhouette effect and showing detail but overall it misses a bit. Contrast is what makes the image and because it is so striking and effective in that aspect, it will probably make my top 5.

And the statue has a maritime astrolabe.. Good news was that Cabot went first and had a cross staff. Lovely picture with end of the day sunshine
The second figure looks understaffed by comparison
