  #111 Contrast
Entry 1 of 14
Mixing Apples and Oranges       ©2011 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       1st place, 160 points
1/4s, f5.6, ISO 200, 35mm, Manual, Spot, no flash
Post-Processing: Layered (overlay) two images taken on tripod at different exposure settings to increase dynamic range (makes blacker blacks and whiter whites and increases colour intensity while controlling blown highlights), duplicated base image to selectively reduce noise, adjust brightness, contrast, slight vertical crop, resize, sharpen.       Extra Info: Avoided using the title, Apples and Oranges, in deference to Paul CÚzanne!

At first I thought the visualization of the abstract expression for contrast ("mixing apples and oranges") might not work universally (the title phrase might not be understood all over the world) but found an interesting comparison of the usage of the phrase (which made me think it was worth a shot) which can be found here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apples_and_oranges

Congratulation on another first. I thought you were back directly I saw the crisp colours . Looking forward to the out takes. Had you used pears instead of oranges you the cockney rhyming slang of Stairs .

The reflection is real. The fruit is sitting on top of a brown coloured glass table top from a patio set.

Beautiful photo. The contrast in the deep dark background and the colorful, sharply-focused fruit is amazing. The apples and oranges metaphor provided a good subject. My #1. (Is that a real reflection or a pp generated one?)

Thanks, Lo & Mepo. Fiddled with the image in HDR last night and liked the results better than my entry here. Will post in out-takes.

Unbelievable! What an incredible treatment of a few pieces of fruit. The colour and contrast is enough to make my mouth water. And the reflection just brings it on home... My No 1

Old Finn. I thought about the crop but preferred the deliberately central horizontal placement using the rule of thirds on the vertical element only.

Thomas. Thanks. I was surprised to read in the wikipedia article referenced in my extra info. how universal these expressions are across so many cultures and languages.

AG Very, very sweet of you! Thanks!

elliott Merry Christmas! The glass is brown smoked tabletop glass from a patio set brought indoors for the winter.

fc I guess that makes me no one! I realized after deadline that I actually meant to say used two different shutter speeds with the same aperature. If I have time after voting is done, I'll post the two pics in Outtakes so you can see the difference. 1/4 s. and 1/15 s.

Very nice picture. Maybe I would have cropped a bit less centrally. Anyway my Nr 2

This image certainly has the "WOW" factor. It is perfect for the theme, and is beautifully done! Very, very nice!

sorry i didn't get an entry in again but still felt like voting and leaving a few comments.

sometimes when i see a lengthy 'extra info' i think the member isn't thoroughly convinced the entry can stand on its own. you don't have anything to worry about with this one.
it is right on theme, color and contrast great, and what i like the most is that you found a good reflective surface not like most glass and mirrors that end up giving a slight double reflection. what surface did you use?

happy holidays!!!

No one doubts this is number one. What the aperture same on the second exposure ?
