Morning Sentinel       ©2012 Jade O.
Panasonic DMC-FZ30       3rd place, 206 points
1/500s, f8, ISO 80, 35mm, Normal Program, Pattern, no flash
Post-Processing: Two image stitch, minor clone, resize, sharpen.       Extra Info: "When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return."

The iconic DC-3 emerges, as if from the morning mists of time, in early May to greet its waiting pilot reborn to a new day's experience in the magic of flight. (Or something dreamily romantic like that - it really does feel that way - hope the image conveys some sense of it).

Thanks, Michael, Lo. Hmmm, Watson deduces 8 hours ago makes you night owls or traveling...

I have to second Lo's comment. Love this one from the start - wonderful work with the backlight, perfect amount of detail in the silhouette.

Sorry I couldn't comment sooner, Jade - but I absolutely love the feeling that surrounds this shot. Great work with the lighting - to me it's just perfect!

RolandB It is always the small details that you'd never think of that move an image to the next level.

Bill, I especially liked the third flyby in #4 (for all others wondering what we're talking about, see Bill's entry for the links).

Thanks mrsawyer.

Congratulations, Jade O. This is a very pleasing to the eye composition. The flowers really make it special.

Thanks for the links. I had seen the recently found fighter. Clearly the prop was turning when it 'landed'. I suppose the pilot struck out trying to get somewhere, and away from the plane. Obviously he did not understand the desert.

Had not seen the 'fly by' video. That was fun! Thanks.

Bill, the quote is attributed or misattributed to Leonardo da Vinci in his Codex Atlanticus; I haven't been able to source it with any confirmation.

I say with confirmation that they are the privileged that have flown in this aircraft, and most privileged those who have piloted her. Thanks for the top vote; you understand the feeling.

Okay, you got me. I am a pilot, and I love the quote. But you don't get off that easily. The shot is beautifully composed and reeks of adventure and mystery. One thinks of WWII, 'Casablanca', and I think of my first flight that was in a plane just like this. My favorite.

fc/mrsawyer I think the dandelions are a major element in what makes this work (to the extent that it works at all). I sense there is a visual metaphor at play; the earthly hordes vs. the chosen few who have the privilege to fly above them.

mrsawyer Lighting makes all the difference. See outtakes for a different angle.

elliott I keep thinking the final scene in Casablanca. But credit to the magnificent designers of the day to make a plane that looks like it is soaring while parked on the ground.

RolandB Partial silhouettes are hard to balance properly. Pleased to have your affirmation that this one worked .

been there and got the t shirt . what a lovely evocative picture. the clocks in front add the time element. (dandelion clocks)

Lots to like here. The flowers in the foreground add a nice touch! I think the most attractive part is the variance in background lighting. At the risk of sounding corny, it seems to caress the image of the plane! Great find! In my favs.

i like your shot. just the right treatment to capture the nostalgia of the scene. there was a company here in the 80's that would fly at least one of these to the islands for gambling trips. they would fire it up out of view on the other side of the airport so as not to scare passengers with its belching smoke as it came to life.

another sort of nostalgic view i took recently that you might appreciate. the shuttle discovery after so many flights now retired and waiting to be transported to virginia. it was in the most immense hanger but sort of had the same feel i see in your shot. hope you enjoy it as i enjoyed yours.
